I love how this ridiculously meaningless topic has been dragged out into 4 pages of debating various levels of douchery and gunnery. I understand that this girl is committing an eggregious transgression against the OP, but c'mon.

Definitely gets my vote for "Meaningless Thread of the Day."

This. You lose nothing by allowing your neighbor to "steal  " your notes. You lose everything by allowing your inner thoughts out into the world.

TITCR. Your classmates can't see inside your head, and they can't see the way you are connecting different concepts together. These connections are what will get you high marks on your exam, not the content of your notes.

Yeah, I understand how the legalese type writing rubbed people the wrong way. I don't think that type of writing makes my arguments more persuasive. I have just been doing so much work on legal research and writing assignments that I kind of like expressing arguments like that. It's kind of fun.

I can also understand how everyone would view my comments as some huge overreaction. I just like to argue and defend my point. This was kind of like a game to me. Yes, I got defensive when I was randomly attacked as a "gunner douche," thats true. I did not attack or insult anyone, yet others have ganged up on, and attacked/insulted me. Nothing I said warranted those comments.

The fact is, this situation does annoy me. I think it would annoy anyone, especially considering the extent to which it is happening. I was just posting to see if others had had similar experiences, and frankly just to see what sort of discussion would be sparked.

Okay, this has gone on way too long.

We've established the subject of your ire is female, and I'm gonna assume that with a name like bigcheeta69 that you're male. More than likely you're both straight, and since you're high-strung-enough to be so vexed by this situation I take it that you're not getting any at the moment.

Grow a spine and confront her. Do it playfully so you don't come off as a douche. You might be surprised what develops. And hey, even if you're not interested in her, odds are she has some cute single friends that you'd be gaining access to by befriending her.

nope. everyone here shares notes/outlines all the time and gets notes from other people over shoulders and shit like that. We don't care. When I was out sick I got notes from others. Nobody worries that their notes are being stolen or stupid crap like that. Life is too short to be an asshole.

hahaha i can imagine "that guy" already -- hell, they already exist in undergraduate courses lol. obviously, being in law school and trying to make connections, becoming "that guy" should be on the bottom of anyone's list (though to be fair, "that guy" NEVER seems to know he is "that guy") -- OP should try to keep that in mind

If its so annoying for them to copy your notes, just start copying down their g-chat or blatantly reading it during class. Private conversations are way more personal then the professors lecture.

No it wasn't. That's what people say when they've been outed as an overly sensitive arrogant gunner douche.

bigcheetah69 wrote:Yes, I got defensive when I was randomly attacked as a "gunner douche," thats true. I did not attack or insult anyone, yet others have ganged up on, and attacked/insulted me. Nothing I said warranted those comments.

That is not true. Getting pissed at somebody looking at your computer screen and posting about it online and then debating whether or not to get a screen shield = our comments being warranted.

bigcheetah69 wrote:I think it would annoy anyone

No, it wouldn't.

bigcheetah69 wrote: I was just posting to see if others had had similar experiences, and frankly just to see what sort of discussion would be sparked.

Yeah, and we all told you that you were being a gunner douche and that you should keep your thoughts to yourself. We were offering you advice to change your way of thinking or at least not to expose yourself to your classmates as a gunner douche. You got defensive and started trying to law student smart guy pwn us. The results of that endeavor and littered throughout this thread, if you'd like to go review.

Nesker-

Edit: And tbh op, we really were just trying to help you to create an image of cooperation and friendliness w/ you classmates which will only help you in your future. We pretty much all think that you are "that guy" which is the worst label you can get at law school. That many people thought you were being ridiculous and told you about it (albeit maybe in not the most happy unicorn and rainbows kind of way) only evidences the truth of the matter.

The problem is, no matter how much people try to help out the "that guys" of the class, they don't listen. They don't think they are doing anything wrong. You don't hear the groans when you are called on in class and the massive amounts of mouse clicking that indicates people checking facebook when you begin talking. I feel bad b/c I am not the type to insult and judge people but you really need to take a long, hard look at what image you want to portray at ls. We are all (except maybe my good friend opera) at least somewhat competitive. We want good grades. If someone looks at your screen, you may feel a quick twinge of protectionism in your veins, but don't give into it. Make friends w/ your classmates and be awesome to them. If you finish high in the class AND have tons of lifelong friends/connections, we will be so much happier than always having to defend your sense of indignation at somebody peering onto your computer screen and gobbling up all of your sacred notes.

Worst label you can get anywhere. In the military, or at least the Army, "that guy" or a "gunner" is known as a Blue Falcon (phonetic camouflage, read: buddy fucker). This also applies to people who are inept (e.g., blanket party in Full Metal Jacket). Suffice to say, making life difficult for, or running afoul of people you have to see on a regular basis will often have the opposite effect.

I don't know if anyone watches Dexter. The main character boasts conventional and social intelligence, and, more importantly, has learned how to use both to his advantage. If you can master that, uh, without sociopathy and/or serial killing, then I think you've pretty much mastered life. People with social intelligence typically far much better than those with high conventional IQs, or at least, those who lord their high IQs over others.

Anyway, I think this thread is past its prime. There is a lot of good information here, and a lot of it is going to go to waste. Is there a thread where social intelligence and/or "gunners" are discussed at length? Irony noted of course.

wont lie, bolded is true. though i always would have showed notes to a classmate if he/she wanted to see it (id prob even email it to a stranger in my section unless they asked for it every class lol), now i will also keep in mind the notion that law school is as much about learning the law as it is about networking haha.

OP should chill out because all of the professor's class notes are probably in an old outline somewhere, anyway. I don't think you attend class simply to get an idea of what's in those outlines.

dude, how do you know the people BEHIND you aren't doing the same thing?

you should really install a mirror on the corner of your screen

Do you really think that will be sufficient? I'd make sure to embed some sort of retina-penetrating laser within the core of the mirror. That'll teach those fuckers to not mess with your notes! Don't get it the first time? Too bad! Go on Outline Depot or transfer to Irvine so you can go to Chemerinksy's office hours, but you're sure as hell not getting any repeats here!

On a serious note, we have classes where one student takes notes and sends them to the whole class. Nobody cares. The point of law school isn't to horde notes. Nobody will ever have anything but negative things to say about you if this is really the type of mentality you carry through law school and into the real world. Perhaps it doesn't matter to you, but I think the world of my classmates here - they are incredibly talented. I want to be able to reach out to them in the future.

Wow, I just read this entire thread. Don't even know what to say, but I'll give it a try. First of all, if you can't see why OP was upset about what was happening then I don't know what to say. OP was obviously being taken advantage of. I don't know about you, but I don't appreciate that, even on something as trivial as class notes. That said, OP, don't show up to class with a shield. That does look douchey. You basically have two options: (1) Bite the bullet and don't do anything, or (2) very politely, and very tactfully, mention your concern to the person hawking your notes. Realize, though, that doing so could turn a friend into an enemy. So you have a little balancing act here. I would say if you know this person is hopeless and is not going to outperform you on the exam by virtue of having stolen your notes, then just bite the bullet. You can't fight every battle.

This is the lamest thread I've ever read. And I've read a ton. Chill out and realize there may be times when you have to check someone else's notes or tell the person to fuck off. It's that easy. Don't be getting all passive-aggressive. That attitude is what makes law students generally suck.

I dont think your wrong for being annoyed that someone is copying your notes every class you have with her. People who dont think it's annoying are probably the people copying...just saying.

You need to tell the girl to back off! Unless you have no friends...her going around talking about you isn't going to hurt you. There will always be someone who does or doesnt like you, at least you'd know the reason for why this particular person doesnt. Plus, why dont you just sit somewhere else? If she's stalking you, sit in between two people. Eventually she'll get the gist.

If you want to be roundabout you can "confide" in her that you really hate when people copy your notes. It's a pet peeve of yours. That way, she'll be a lot less obvious when stealing your notes or will sit by someone else. I think you should just be blunt and tell her to get her sh*t together.
