Necessities for Law School

Post by livitup11 » Wed Jan 20, 2010 3:55 pm

Law Students- what are the school supplies/electronics/food/other items that you could absolutely not survive law school without? What isn't necessary?

I'm currently shopping for a second monitor, wireless ergonomic keyboard and mouse, and docking station for my laptop. I've decided not to be hunched over my laptop typing for 3 more years. It occured to me I might want to invest in a few other items, but I'm not sure what's useful and what's not.

I imagine that i'll eat many Bananas...good source of energy (good carb), Potassium, easy and quick when you can't grab breakfast. Can't go to law school without keeping a good supply of those on hand.

I also have a docking station and external monitor -- they are an awesome combo, especially when it comes to outlining since I can have multiple documents in view at once.

I second the advice to have your laptop in good working order and to make sure you like it. Also, make sure you have a way to securely back up your data. This can be done with an external hard drive or you can get a service to back up your data for a monthly or yearly fee. I do the latter. Basically, just plan ahead to do this to avoid losing all your work at an inopportune time.

I've heard that I should start stocking up on highlighters now ... especially the yellow ones.

Looks great. So it works well with big-ass law books?

adjustable, and it works good enough for the 7.50 you pay for it.

- edit - I have the amar con law book, and if it works with that thing, it should work for anything

Headphones (more helpful than you will ever realize)
Highlighters (they go sssooo fast)
Back up hard drive (and actually use it)
USB Flash Drive (comes in handy more than you would think)
Suit (Black is the easiest)
Comfortable Bed (Memory Foam toppers are the best)
Snacks for the Library (Prevents you from spending too much $ at school)

Edit: Re this suit business - Black is the easiest - though it is true, charcoal is probably better, but I'm not a big fan of blue suits for women . . .

The generic Staples brand is my favorite. Yellow, of course.

not to open up a can of worms here, but don't get a black suit - if you have only 1 suit - make it charcoal or navy . . . if you have 2 suits, make it charcoal and navy . . . after you have a charcoal and a navy, you can branch out into other colors, but the standard business suit is either charcoal or navy

I thought Navy was the go to business suit color.

I never thought this would be a problem, but nearly every article of clothing I have has a yellow stain on it now.

Something that has really helped me are cookbooks. Seriously. I've got the Joy of Cooking, and then various ones for Mediterranean, Mexican, and Asian cooking. Williams and Sonoma also makes a great one called 'Fast Weekday Meals' or something like that. Coupled with a decent investment in kitchen implements, this can save you tons of money and time, and you will always have the ability to make great food.

Oh yes, a large casserole dish and a slow-cooker are essentials. There is nothing like having either a) mass amounts of enchiladas or b) a great chili ready and waiting for you when you get home.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
