Will LLM at Duke University help me sit in the NC bar exam?

Post by lawcrazy » Wed Jan 06, 2010 2:24 pm

I have a foreign LLM degree (from India) with 7 years of law firm experience. Now I am planning to join the one year LLM program at Duke University which is meant for the international students. I have heard that even after successful completion of the program a person is not eligible to sit in the bar exam in all US states except a few like NY, CA etc. I was wondering if anybody know how are the job prospects after LLM in US and if one gets a NY license is there any way he/she will be allowed to practice in other states also?

If that is what you want, you should consider obtaining a J.D. There are two year options, which will allow you to take the bar exam in any jurisdiction.

I droped my LLM aspirations in favor of a J.D. and decided not to attend an expedited programm.
