~20% of people do very little beyond reading the cases, may not even outline for exams.

~60% do the standard stuff, but don't go the extra mile. They read all the cases, they outline, they take some or all of the professor's practice exams, they use the E&Es/Gilbert's/Emanuels but aren't drilling BLL or practice questions.

~20% do everything imaginable, outline early, do tons of practice questions in the E&E, leave no stone unturned.

I know of some people who were drilling hypos with each other on a bi-weekly basis as early as September. I know of some people who didn't start outlining until 5 days before the first exam and probably never cracked open a supplement or did a single practice question.
Ah, that's interesting. I think I probably would be in the 60% category. Another question that's related to this: do you find that the varying groups like the law more or less than the others, or is this stratification primarily a result of career ambition?

I feel like I could imagine it cutting either way: the gunners (?) 20% hating the law because they have to spend so much time with it, or the gunners loving the law for the same reason. And maybe for the 60% they love the law but just have a happy medium?
If you use the phrase "cutting either way" while speaking to anyone besides a professor, chances are you're one of the gunners.

I think this 20%/60%/20% model is a little silly. The "leave no stone unturned" approach smacks of 1L insanity and inefficiency.

 If I'm a gunner, then this whole forum must be one very elaborate trolling attempt, haha.

The "leave no stone unturned" approach basically sounds like the models Arrow and such proposed, which seems to be an approach that a number of folks on here have adopted. Personally, I look at that thread and find the prospect soul-incinerating.

Dear people who have treated me like I'm bottom of the curve material at UoC because I'm a transfer student and don't extensively brief cases/highlight my book/etc. and didn't come from an ivy league school:

I won't say anything to you personally, but allow me to express the same sentiment that I expressed to people last year who assumed that, because I went to a shitty state school and got a "useless" degree I would be at the bottom of the class:

Fuck you, now go get me my coffee

I just got my grade for contracts. I now have three of four grades. I wonder what's taking so long with LRLW. We turned in our final briefs a week before final exams even began.

our torts prof just told a student he has no idea why the grades from his class aren't up yet since he submitted them to the registrar ages ago

he also said he's going to email the section the grade distribution this afternoon, but we have no idea if that means distribution with anonymous numbers attached (so we can figure out our grades) or not

Congratulations!

Seriously, though: did people really mistreat you for this stuff? I ask, because I was expecting it. I don't imagine that people expect great shakes of me, either, with a fashion merchandising degree, but no one in my class has ever said anything remotely rude about it. I was quite surprised that people were not more dickish, since I had been warned to brace for it and to keep details like my UG to myself.

We are waiting for one more grade, so I will know soon enough. It feels like half my class went to an Ivy, or at least a T20 UG. I know I am an outlier, though I exceeded the median numerically for admission to this program. I would not ever have gotten in were it otherwise. I hope I earned this seat.

Legal writing (2 credits) and CivPro (4 credits) to go.

curve is 3.0

We are waiting for one more grade, so I will know soon enough whether I can compete with the former Ivy kids in my class. Yes, there are a bunch of them, even at my non T14.
I went to an Ivy, and I lol so hard when people make a comment about how that means I must be smart. I knew tons of morons at my and other ivies. Good SAT scores/ECs in high school does not an intelligent human make. And college/freedom/weed/partying saps motivations without discriminating based on the Prestige of your undergraduate institution.
I would argue that intelligence is necessary but not sufficient for an Ivy worthy SAT score. Those of your classmates who got in by their numbers were not idiots, though their conduct post admission might have made you wonder. I have heard the assumption bandied about that there are fewer intelligent people at (non-elite) state undergrads, but fortunately I've only heard this on TLS. IRL, people have been surprisingly cool. I've been embraced as a peer and an equal by people at law schools up and down the rankings, which is just weird, given my personal tendency toward self deprecation.

Classes started at my Tier 2 yesterday. Apparently a classmate email the Dean about grades and was told they'd be "another few weeks." One classmate offered an interesting theory: that the school is holding grades long enough that students with poor grades will be less likely/able to drop out and get a tuition refund. Anyone think this idea has merit?

Was more of a problem after the transfer than it was 1L, but yeah, I got a lot of it last year, too.

It is the University of Chicago. What did you expect?

As for ToTransferOrNot, congrats!!
It's pretty shocking to me. I've never heard of someone at UT acting like that.

Just got my grades.

Got A's in all classes. Now time to wait for Cali awards and not work on my resume.

FYI- I go to a T2 with a nasty curve.

Now time to contemplate transferring.

Good luck to everyone that is waiting, I would hate for the grades to trickle in

1) the vast majority are not dicks
2) chips on shoulders are difficult for most people to deal with adequately
