Many (most?) law schools do not use a normal distribution. My school puts 46% of students in the "B" category, with only 5% below that. It's a crazy two-humped curve, not a normal distribution.

regression to the mean bandito. Each grade doesn't have to be normal, the resulting distribution does (and likely will). Your mileage may vary. Using one number and getting SD = .4 and the other SD = .37 is strong evidence of normality. For UVA both gave SDs of 2.7X, so UVA is all but certainly normal.

Which is to say: Absent more precise information, my method is better than guessing by a large amount.

The problem with statistics is that this is correct. But, absent your method, reading tea leaves might be the next-best predictor. That doesn't make your terribly wrong method any good, just better than tea-leaves.

Thank you! I managed to be one of the few science majors who made it through without every taking a stats class, and as such can't do any math that isn't programed into excel. We should also sticky you explanation there in the 0L/1L thread. I promise I'll stay out of this thread now and let you wait for your last grades in peace. Good luck to you all!

Did you have to specify closed exam? I tried opening mine (I like to torture myself) to no avail. Either I am incompetent, my mac is incompetent, or this mode precludes rereading exams.

The one I read had been an open exam. Regardless, my license or whatever has run out. I could probably download it again, but I don't think it's worth the effort at this point; I hardly remember the hypos or the class material.
