Everyone, but mostly Snooker.
Is being a giant dork a bannable offense?
If this were true, this site would have substantially less members.

My Con Law prof wanted citations (and individual justices' names) but my Prop and CrimLaw profs didn't mention it. I threw some in anyway in a desperate bid to escape being medianpwnt.

Well, the Jets helped me out. Still don't have any grades though. Damn you, Penn.

Our school curves to a "mode grade" of 3.0. The last graduating class has a median GPA of 3.22. The 1L class at the end of last year had a median GPA of 3.17. ????

Who bothers with Mode? That is by far the most useless statistic of the three for the purposes of class grading (considering median and mean, as well).

*face palm*

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistics

Median != mode. For convenience, mean ~= median in large data shapes around a center point like grades. At a school like UVA, mean, median, and mode likely all equal 3.3 since profs tend to give out B+s like candy.

But it would be pretty simple to imagine a distribution that yielded a mode of 3.0 in each class (that is, more Bs given out than any other grade) but has a much higher median.

A bad but sound example:

B-: 10%
B: 30%
B+: 25%
A-: 20%
A: 15%

'B' would be the mode grade, but median and mean would be substantially higher.

geez louise, sealocust. i'm sure he already knew what "median" and "mode" mean but was just surprised about the spread of GPA's he has seen...

Yeah what he said ^. That said, if it was a normal distribution, mode and mean should be the same, but they obviously are not (since it's not a normal distribution).

What confuses me, however, is I've seen the grade dist. for a few classes, and the mode grade has most certainly NOT been a B.

Really dumb question... but I'm a stats idiot.... so given the grade distribution below...

A+ 0-5%
A+, A, A- 20-30% (A+ subject to 5% limitation above)
B+ and above 40-60% (subject to limitations on A range above)
B 10-50% (subject to limitations above and below)
B- and below 10-30% (subject to limitations below on ranges C+ and below)
C+ and below 0-10%
D, F 0-5%

A B+ is the median right because 40-60% need to be B+ or above, and only 20-30% can get in the A range? So does it turn out (typically) that an overall GPA of a 3.3 puts you smack in the center of the class?

You're allowed up to 30% A range grades? Where is the jealous emoticon?

Don't be jealous. It didn't really help me out... that 3.3 I was asking about... is for a friend... lets call him "sightedmelon" or something.

Thesealocust might be right, especially since we curve to 3.19. A 3.3 here is not bad at all, since top 10% is 3.57.

Sending hugs. Grades just plain suck. (I got long memo-pwned, which is technically only 30% of a grade, but still.)

Wow. Our curve is much more generous. A 3.5 is top 1/3rd here.

Yup. I did well, but got rocked in Torts which pulled my gpa down to a 3.3x.. no idea how that happened. Oh well, I hated that class anyway. I'm entertaining dropping out... but thats a different story.

Don't say these things to me. Please don't. (I was thinking about a JD/MSW, but not because of my grades. Well, at least not yet because of my grades. Please, Contracts, please be something good!)

Is the measuring/grading/curving getting to you? It's relentless, and it's the only thing I honestly dislike about law school. The material itself is fascinating to me, and I don't want to leave, but I find myself wondering what it would be like to be a therapist. A joint degree might be perfect. If there are no legal jobs out there, I want to have options, and I know you also want to do something in the public interest.
