It's normal. Need-based grants at the grad level are almost unheard of, afaik.

I've just been admitted as PT, but I plan to transfer to FT after 1L - I don't actually want or need to be PT (I've got a wife to support me and I've been out of college for a few years, so I've got savings), but my numbers weren't quite where I thought they needed to be to go FT.
Anyway, I think that I'm technically c/o 2015 since PT is a 4-year program, but I plan on graduating in 2014.

*waves* Suppose it's about time I officially checked in here as well.

I have all of my 1L outlines including an outline from Administrative Law (it is beautiful). I finished @ top 25% so take them with a grain of salt (especially crim law- I struggled with that course).

If you want it, you have to send me something witty and awesome.

Congratulations! I don't think FT or PT matters--we are all at the same starting point and are likely to have many of the same concerns and interests, e.g., finding a place to live, meeting classmates, getting settled into the program, etc. You should also join the Facebook page for admitted students.

I was admitted to the PT program as of yesterday. Ive been working in Houston for two years, and am not completely sure if i will attend since the thought of continuing working full time and doing law school simultaneously scares me. I currently live in the heights and have lived on washington/studemont and memorial areas. If anyone has any questions about those or about the social scene, i'd be happy to answer any.

Man, I would love to hear something new besides "your PLUS loan came in."

I'd like to know sections and stuff, just to give me something to be excited about at work.

haha I'm such a nerd, I looked up all the classes from the registration site and put them in my gcal... the only thing that changes between the sections (other than the professors) is LRW... I wanna know when mine is!

Yeah, knowing exactly how much I'm going to be in the hole after year one isn't helping me get pumped. I also need to something to keep me excited at work because work certainly isn't enough to do it.

I have a question for any 2L or 3Ls who may be checking this thread:

Are the PT student GPAs ranked alongside the FT students' GPAs?

I think that such a practice would be wholly unfair, but as a PT student (and benefactor of my perceived inequality), I hope that it is the case.

-Any PT kids care to chime in about their experiences 1L summer? I don't particularly want to work a FT SA or clerkship or similar, but at the same time, I don't want to be hamstrung by not doing those things. Is there PT summer work that provides networking opportunities

-Is there a stigma associated with having been a PT student when it comes time to find work? I plan on transferring to FT after 1L and finishing in 3 years, but I'm curious if that will work against me (in 2L summer employment or after graduation)

Yep. Keep in mind that all of the PT students are in the same classes together that first year. UH has a very tight curve placed on grades, resulting in a few A's and A-'s, tons of B+'s, B's, and B-'s, and then few C's. So each class, regardless of FT or PT, will have the same distribution of grades. It is a fair system for the most part.

However, the actual restraint placed upon the professors is that the cumulative GPA has to be somewhere between a 3.2 and a 3.3, or something close to that. So some professors may just give 1 or 2 A's, with a ton of B's, and 1 or 2 C's. Or they may give 5 or 6 A's, a ton of B's, and then 5 or 6 C's. So that's the only real downside, each professor can tweak it a little bit.

You can go into the student affairs office and look in the grade distribution binder, which is located in the hallway. You can find out if a particular professor gave a lot of A's in the previous semesters for that class. You can also look back after you get your grades to see how you fared compared to everyone else. I never really picked classes based on that, but some people really particular about grades will want to check that out.

Has the PT tuition been posted somewhere? The email said it would be up by the end of last week, but I don't see anything online. I can estimate by doing a 5% increase over last year's tuition, but I want the official number.
