I still haven't joined the facebook group though.
I am definitely interested - I won't have a car though...I was originally just going to bus to Eldora, but would rather do Keystone or Breck.
If I ever hear back from CU this week I will be joining you guys. I will definitely hit the slopes and I have a truck so I can haul some people and gear to the slopes if need be.

So, ASD-eqsue question for Denver/Boulder area people: is there a nice Thai place in Denver that is also good? I want to get some curry w/a friend, and we were hoping for a slightly upscale spot.

His suggestions are...not great.

Edit: My sentences are awful! I mean that I don't want a Pei Wei knockoff. I want a place with actual Thai food that doesn't serve other cuisines. His suggestions were Se7en (pretentious naaaame!) and Parallel Seventeen, if that helps you know what I *don't* want haha.

So, no fusion (and Parallel Seventeen is Vietnamese, isn't it?) Not so upscale, but with really good Thai is Tommy's Thai on Colfax. An undiscovered place that I love is called Thai Pot on South Colorado Blvd - it's in a strip mall, but the food is fantastic. Try the Lad Na with scallops (chicken if you're not into the seafood thing), and ask them to stir an egg into it... Mmmmm, I know what's for dinner tonight...

I actually suggested this after looking through yelp a little bit! This and Chada Thai I think were what I emailed back to him.

Parallel Seventeen was confusing me w/its pho references and I guess now I know why!

I would be totally pro strip mall Thai, but he's trying to be fancy.

I'm a grad student at CU and I suggest you familiarize yourself with "the food court on the Hill". It's on the Hill, just West of campus. Find Illegal Pete's and it's next to that, down some stairs. One of the places there is Thai Avenue; it's pretty good and cheap. I usually get noodles, but they have curries, soups, and stir fries. In the same place there's a decent bento box restaurant, okay mediterranean, good sandwiches (Snarf's, they won't be there permanently), an okay pizza place (but don't eat there, go to Abo's) and a new and good Nepalese place.

Granted, this doesn't really answer your question about a nice place in Denver (I've been to Swing Thai (?) in Denver, it was meh), but it's solid advice if you're going to be a poor student in Boulder. Really, if you want dinner in Denver you should go to Watercourse for vegetarian/vegan food.
I will look at Watercourse! Thanks!

I haven't been to Chada Thai yet, but it's definitely a nice looking place that serves both Thai and Chinese. It's also on a really hip strip of bars/restaurants/coffee shops. St. Marks coffeehouse has been a hipster mainstay for at least the last 20 years (originally downtown, where I spent many a teenage night), and the owner's bar is next door, the Thin Man.

Watercourse Foods is okay, but I've always found it to be a place where flavor is lacking. Yeah, everything's really healthy, but I think it's a premier vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Denver because it's the only vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Denver.

Houston is beating Denver on a weird front w/this one.

How about suggestions for housing? Rent.com was pretty worthless and the stuff on the Facebook group seems to be targeted towards folks looking for roommate situations. I'm looking for a house or townhouse in Boulder proper; not interested in living out of town. My wife has expressed an interest in North Boulder, but we're open to wherever as long as it isn't frat row/undergrad central. Can anybody suggest neighborhoods/resources?

Areas to avoid: The Hill (just west of campus), the area along 28th/30th just east of campus, Goss/Grove neighborhood, some of the Martin Acres area has a lot of students, but some of it is single families.

How about Mapleton Hill, near North Boulder Park? I want to narrow down the list of places I need to see during the April ASD.

i'm hoping to narrow things down in time to visit a few places during ASD...but so much of what's available seems to be aimed at undergrads, i can't live in party central, i'm too old for that crap!

You could take my tack on the whole thing, and live in Denver. College towns squick me out, man!

yeah, i thought about that but we've decided to become a one vehicle family and i'll be using public transportation for everything during 1L...i figure even though it will cost more for rent, we'll save a lot in gas, insurance, and car payments. after the first year though, who knows where we'll end up...denver could happen....

Same boat. Trying to set up some showings for April ASD via long distance is proving taxing. Add in the fact that we have a (well behaved, 100% housebroken) dog and I feel your pain.

I'm with you guys. I'm a little older, a little more married, and a little less able to hold my liquor. As much as I would love to live near the school, I don't want to be the little old cat lady sitting in my rocker, screaming at the undergrads on my property while waving a shotgun.
