Total costs (judging each school's cost of attendance without looking into how they break down) would be like $30-40K more expensive at Chicago than the rest.

I don't know what to think of it..

If you like chicago (city and school) and want to go there and think you will be happy there, then i don't see 30-40k as significant enough amount to go to a lesser school that you would not be as happy with. I'll let others chime in on the relative merits of the schools, but i personally would be unhappy if i feel that i settled for a school that i liked less because of 30-40k. (look at it this way, it's only half a year's salary of a government job, not even biglaw)

I just looked at the actual breakdown for the first time(was at work earlier and checking by phone so only read first page). Seeing the numbers broken down makes me not even want to go to law school man. 40k/yr+23k undergrad loans= 150k debt on graduation WITH large scholarship.

I'm confused. I only got 60K and I have 150k debt. ????

Depends on your career goals/geography preferences. I feel like these are the two biggest factors in school choice.

In total honesty, I'm not sure about career goals.. want to leave PI as an option though. No geographic preferences for LS, would probably want to return to the DC area eventually, though not necessarily immediately.

And Ivan, it's not that I like the other schools less- in fact, in the beginning they were my top choices.

If any of them stands out at ASW, I'll go there, I think they're all great options, but barring that.. SOMEONE MAKE MY LIFE DECISION FOR ME!? lol

Kay. ;)

Go to Chicago, assuming they give me $ too. We can play board games, snark, and drink.

And learn the law and shit, that too.

Just for kicks I decided to look up UChicago undergrad and calculate how much it would cost to send my kids(If I were to have one today) there if it continues to rise at the current typical rate. Answer: about $136,200 just for their freshman year  . Maybe I should just stay poor so they can get financial aid. Might pay off in the long run.

What snarky drinking board games are you referring to?

So what are others' guesses on the Rubensteins if you they don't hit 20 with their initial offers? Have they not offered packages to their candidates yet, or are those of us sitting with 90k packages next in line? Kind of a hard year to interpret Chicago...

My guess is that those who haven't received aid offers yet are in the running for rubies if enough people turn them down.

My guess would be those with 90K are next.. I would think they gave out* enough offers that they expect to hit near 20, and it would be dangerous to ignore someone entirely on the off chance they want to make more offers- someone with nothing might withdraw before finding out.

I'm not sure I'm phrasing that well, lol

*Edit to add: gave out/will give out-- I'm not sure they're done yet?

I mean, really all of them. I'm a fan of Catan/Diplomacy/Risk type games, though for pure drinking hilarity, nothing can beat Drinka (Jenga while drinking. Advanced players write actions on the pieces to add to the insanity.). I'm actually playing Dominion and drinking RIGHT NOW. Really, I'd play Sorry! if you gave me decent beer. Actually, that'd be kind of fun...

Re: $ I don't think they're done. Since some people were notified that they got nothing and some of us (I'm guessing the Feb admits) haven't gotten anything yet, I imagine there is still more to come.

At least I really, really hope there is.

I'm fortunate enough not to have any debt from undergrad, so I'm admittedly in a better position than most, but money would REALLY help me put that deposit down, if you're reading, UChi...

P.S. arism87, I like you too. :)

:D Loved all the posts (just saw them today - had no internet yesterday but knew I had an email so let me tell you the freakout story later).

Anyway... floored by the offer. Not sharing the exact amount, but it's >$50,000 and I am so incredibly happy!!! Chicago it is. I CANNOT WAIT to be there in the fall. And I hope you all come with.

And arism, srsly... just come to Chicago. Boom. Decision made.

I just want to make sure...all I needed to fill out was need access and fafsa, right? Not this "University of Chicago Graduate Loan and Work Study Application"?

congrats to everyone!

So a recap so far:

1st round admits (1/7) all received their financial package (which includes scholarship/grants/loans)
2nd round admits (2/10) have not heard back yet right?

And +1 to the question before me.

Answer is yes to everything. If you are offered graduate government loans then you need to fill out the other form. (which you probably will need to do anyway)

Thanks! The only form I see on there is for the 2010-2011 year, so I guess I have to wait for the 2011-2012 to become available?

Umm specify the form you're talking about please :D

lol I'm pretty confused. I'm looking at the 2010 - 2011 UChicago Graduate Financial Aid Application for Student Loans & Federal Work-Study, which is the one it takes me to when I click on the link under student loans.

There's a form due in May from the Student Loan Administration (SLA) I think on the Uchi website. Havent checked it out yet, but assume that's what the above poster is referring to.

I'm getting to the 2010-2011 form through sla.

Did you fill out the form for 2011-2012? Karla is the one who called me to accept me, so maybe I will. She seems great and from my home town!
