I got mine yesterday and it took a little while (maybe 30-45 minutes) for the password to start working.

i was referring to the likelihood of you putting an expletive in your email. or are you one of those unfortunate people with an expletive for a first or last name?

You should be able to set up an alias that has a period in between your names. It will still send mail to your UChicago email, but you can customize it more.

http://answers.uchicago.edu/16219

There's a way to do it once you pick the real ID and log in.

If anyone is looking for a cheap 1BR near the law school, message me. I decided to attend elsewhere, and my place in Hyde Park will be for rent in the middle of August. The place is at 59th and Blackstone, across the street from International House--a block away from bus stops and the 59th street Metra that takes you downtown. The apartment is roughly 600 square feet and rent is $675 plus electric. The landlord is wonderful. Also, if you have any other questions about living in Hyde Park, feel free to ask. It's reputation as dangerous and boring is overblown in my opinion, especially during the summer.

Anyone else having trouble following Luke's advice on the FB group email thread:

You can set it up in Mail Settings -> Accounts and Import -> Send mail as: -> When replying to a message: -> Choose "Reply from the same address the message was sent to"

For some reason, when I go to Accounts and Import -> Send mail as: -> there is no option for "when replying to a message". Anyone else get this?

Or am I just dumb. Or both.

Duckmoney's recent trip to Chicago: First impressions from a 0L

I just took a trip up to Chicago to look around at housing and generally scope the area. My S.O. is starting her job in Chicago, so I came up to help her move in, store our stuff until the fall, and find housing. Hopefully my insights will help other people planning to move up here.

Moving:

We drove a trailer full of all our stuff from 1000 miles away. This was terrible, although I don't regret it because we don't have to pay to furnish a home. The trailer would fishtail if we went faster than 60, so you can imagine how long it took to get here.

Stuff:

Not sure how many people this will apply to, but I needed to store my stuff for about two months. I lucked into an amazing deal at a Storage Mart just south of Hyde Park, and two months of storage in a 10 x 10 is only $35 (I think the deal is no longer running). I had to hire movers to help with some of the heavier stuff, which really wasn't a terrible idea. The going rate for independent companies seems to be $25 / man hour, which is pretty reasonable. I will be doing this again when I move back out.

Driving:

Driving in Chicago is a miserable experience, especially coming from a relatively small town. It took over two hours to make the 50 mile trek from Gary Indiana to our hotel, and that was on a Saturday evening. The commute from our hotel to hyde park (about 23 miles) took about an hour.

As such, I highly recommend living in hyde park unless you have experience commuting and it doesn't bother you.

Housing:

I looked around at several places (excuse spelling): Regents, 5550 Dorchester, the Mayfare, the Versailles, and University House.

Regents: About what I expected. Very nice, relatively new, very spacious, has a dishwaster, lots of amenities. The only real con is price.

5550 Dorchester: Old, sketchy, small, overpriced. Not worth it.

The Mayfare: Old and sketchy, but at least spacious. Slightly cheaper than regents but not enough to justify it.

The Versailles: Old and sketchy, but the management was great. Considered this one, especially because the price was better, but parking was an issue and I hadn't heard many reviews of it. Seemed nice overall.

University House: Really liked it, can't beat the location, newly renovated, good price. Parking was my biggest issue; no garage, only street parking is available. I'm from a place where it never snows, and the thought of trying to dig the snow out of my car before an exam is terrifying.

I decided to go with Regents just because I know what to expect and I know that housing won't detract from grades. If I didn't have a car, it might have been a different issue, but ample garage parking is a big attraction. I wouldn't recommend one for the most part, but my SO needs one to get to work so that's not an option for me.

Neighborhood:

Hyde Park was quite nice. It's definitely not the ghetto I've heard it was from lawyers who went there in the 80s, and it seems quite diverse and cosmopolitan. Nice shops and restaurants near the university, you feel very safe walking around. Unfortunately, rent is pretty steep across the board.

The surrounding neighborhoods (Woodlawn, Kenwood, Washington Park, etc.) are all very different from Hyde Park. Much more what you think of when you hear "South Side Chicago." I wouldn't want to live there even though they're close to the school and the rent is cheap.

As for commuting from other typical yuppy neighborhoods (South Loop, Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, etc.), I wouldn't want to do it. Commuting in this city is hell. I didn't play around too much with the buses, but the L trains are pretty slow and very crowded during rush hour and there's no good stop near the law school. Buses have to fight through as much traffic as cars, so I would stay away from long bus commutes.

Overall impressions:

If you're not doing Regents, make sure you visit the place before you sign a lease so you can know what to expect. Housing can be really hit or miss. Almost everywhere had vacancy within a month or two, but now is sort of "move out time" for graduating students and such and the city will start filling up in the fall. If you can make a trip out there before September, I'd recommend it.

So, my advice:

Live in Hyde Park
Live somewhere you'll feel safe and comfortable
Don't bring a car unless you have a damn good reason to do so

Hope that helps, and feel free to reply or PM with questions.
