Most if not all of them are opting for HYS. I'm not sure what you mean by bad sign, but we're not privvy to the whole picture and we know they offered more than intended with the expectation that people would turn them down. I ain't scurred.

The people you hear about turning down Rubensteins are on TLS, the most prestige-obsessed place I've ever seen. They want the Yale/Harvard/Stanford name, prestige, and the (few) advantages that those schools have over Chicago. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think it's a reflection on their priorities, not on Chicago.

And as far as my personal feelings on it, I want people to want to be at UChicago, not people who feel obligated to attend because of money. I think it's all for the best, and that the people turning down Rubensteins will be successful/happy where they go, and we'll have a great class full of people who are excited to be at Chi. Win-win.

I personally know 3 people that have taken the Rubie who would have otherwise gone to HYS or CLS. If you look at the Hamilton at CLS there are always those who pursue "prestige' at any price, even at the cost of $150,000 by taking HYS rather than the Hamilton .Clearly the Rubie is doing in large part what it was suppose to do ; attract people with great numbers who would otherwise have gone elsewhere. I am sure no one ever expected that every offeree who be wise enought to take the money over marginally greater prestige.

I would host viewing parties, but I will have neither a couch nor a tv. So unless huddling around a laptop is an option I will defer the hosting job to someone else.
