Hot, humid summers are the worst. Alabama summers = death.

Where are you from that you think Chicago summers are bad?

I'm looking forward to the weather. I love a good winter, especially when everyone else is completely miserable.

Chicago summers can get really bad but the duration is nothing like the warmer parts of the country. I'm a native chicagoan (north side born and raised) and I'm a HUGE fan of cold over hot, I can't wait for that Chicago winter, just as long as the new mayor gets the streets plowed (it's one of those things that Daley did really well and we all loved him for it).

(also a noob to the forum, been following it for a while, looking forward to next year)

didn't see the lolz cat divergence coming...ha
I personally prefer hot to cold unless it's snowy and cold. I hate when the sun is shining bright but is apparently not heating anything up.

I would really like someone to post the weird coat/venus fly trap that goes up to your head again. As a soon-to-be-frigid Southern lady, I think I need all the warmth I can get.

Can someone give me an estimate on how long winter/summer lasts. I've heard mixed reports about the length of chicago winters. Is it a four or a two season place?

Well, I'm still wearing my winter coat in Chicago, so summer definitely isn't here yet. (it's currently 46 and raining, blech!)

Chicago's definitely a four-season place - the changes aren't quite as abrupt as somewhere farther inland like Minneapolis or what not.
Because of the lake, the seasons are a bit delayed compared to the surrounding area - dreary winter gunkiness can last into April, but you might not have to pull out a real winter coat until around New Year's.
If I had to quantify, I'd say spring is more abrupt than autumn is - I've seen CHI area go from snow on the ground to pretty lush greenery fairly quickly.

Also something to note - even though Chicago is by the lake, their winter is much more of a "cold nippy winter" than a "snowy winter" - the amount of snow that Chicago gets in a year is surprisingly very little, but you will most likely see the mercury drop below 0F a couple of times each year. (And wind!)

Does this mean I get a one-time pass to post in the NYU thread again as long as it's helpful?

I'm lying in wait...

I am horrified to see what qualifies as "helpful"

(therefore, yes)

There are spring and fall in Chicago? I thought the two seasons were winter and construction.

Also +1 on the "cold nippy winter" rather than "snowy." The bitter, bitter cold with wind chills dropping into the negative 20s are what really makes you miserable - the snow just forces you to wear boots and makes getting anywhere a pain in the ass.
