Apparently tuition rose $2000 a semester...

Insurance, tuition, and living expenses all increased. It doesn't matter though, I wasn't expecting it and the cut is deep.

Tuition went from 46,4 to 48,9. $1250 a semester, which means the CoL went up about $700/semester by itself.

This is way off-topic, but I wanted to introduce you all to the frightening academic species of gunner professors. Example A: This Weiler guy, who will be teaching the 1L elective Intl. Law course this spring. Here's the course description (emphasis added): https://its.law.nyu.edu/courses/description.cfm?id=8823
An introductory course to the institutions, doctrines and methodologies of international law. A foundation course for all subsequent specializations in international legal disciplines. Emphasis will be put on learning the "operating system" rather than specific "applications" and on international lawyering skills. The methods of international law will be illustrated in two main areas: Use of Force (including terrorism, war in Iraq etc.) and international economic law (emphasis on international trade disciplines.) Laptops are not allowed in the classroom with the exception of a rotating roster of three 'Designated Note Takers' whose notes will be reviewed by the Course TAs and posted on Blackboard. This will enable all other students to give their entire attention to the legal materials and the class discussion surrounding these. (We are in the business of legal education, not stenography.) Not for the faint hearted but the intellectual and professional rewards are commensurate with the effort.

His Wikipedia page also contains an ugly block of text under the unusual heading "Accolades" that consists entirely of blunt sentences like, e.g.,
He is a Council Member of the Centre for European Economic and Public Affairs, University College, Dublin, a Member of the Board of the Centre for the Law of the European Union at University College, London, Member of the International Advisory Board, Queen's University, Belfast, U.K. and at the Ortega Y Gasset Institute, Madrid, Spain. He is Member of the Advisory Council of the Interdisciplinary University Center, Herzelia, Israel. He is Member of the Advisory Board of the Center for International, Comparative Law, The Dickinson School of Law, PennState and Member of the International Council of the Institute for Global Legal Studies, Washington University School of Law, St. Louis and a board member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Max-Planck-Institute fuer auslaendisches oeffentliches Recht und Voelkerrecht in Heidelberg, Germany.
The odd heading, indifference to style, and lack of citation make me think he wrote that himself. This is going to be an interesting three years.

Yeah I'd figure that NYU's PR department would be more savvy than this and write one up for him themselves (for Wikipedia).

And looking at his wikipedia page, I could have sworn I read about him a few months ago in the New York Times in an article about strict French libel laws and their chilling effect on academic discourse or something.

Dammit. Am now seriously rethinking taking Intl. Law in the spring.

I guess those people looking to go into the generic umbrella of "international human rights animal law" are going to have a fun spring semester, at least.

sgtgrumbles wrote:You are wise, Incomp. I called FinAid and was told I should subtract my annual Student Contribution amount from my GradPLUS loan borrowing. This can be done on Albert, so I don't think there are negative consequences for opting to borrow the maximum amount on the Studentloans.gov site.

Apparently an email is going out this afternoon, though, which will have step-by-step instructions for accepting loans. I think the FinAid person said that would go out at 2:00 PM ET. I'm going to wait on that before I do anything else.

anyone get this afternoon email yet?

It'll arrive in mid-July, I think.

Also, I figured I'd take con law but the joke is related to the link

Just got what looks to be this mysterious 2pm email. Three hours...we're steadily improving here

EDIT: This looks more like it. Simple steps:
FAFSA
Review Student Expense Budget
Fill out MPNs and what not
Modify loan amounts on Albert and accept

Is there a way to increase the budget for buying a computer? I thought I heard that somewhere....or is it only the deferred loan thing you get if you buy the computer through the bookstore?

I think you should email the address in the attached letter for more details, but I believe it involves borrowing the max and then request the bump be added to that.

Corps looks like a winner here for me, as I would like to some day be able to sue large banks.

If you've borrowed the maximum amount, then you can ask for a budget increase after October 1st. But you have to give receipts for your computer than was bought after July 15th, I believe.

I don't think there's a ceiling on LRAP-eligible debt, aside from the obvious limit of the annual cost of attendance/tuition. You've got me worried enough that I'll call them today to confirm that, though.

if I remember correctly from the LRAP session at ASW and the award letter that was originally sent out through FAAPS, you are going to have a minimum "student contribution" (SC) of $5100 over three years, and the total LRAP-eligible debt is going to be the CoA for 3 years less this amount.

This number would have been specified in your award letter.

You can decline that SC amount of loans at any time throughout the three years. And the reason you want to pay this student contribution is because if you do, and you borrow only federal loans, then your law school debt will be 100% covered by LRAP. Then, if you make less than $80,000 after graduation, you will pay absolutely nothing toward repaying your loans. However, if you don't pay the SC, and you are even 98% covered, then you will always have to pay something each month toward your loans after graduation.

Go big or go home. I'm going to sit down and read through everything thoroughly tonight, but I cannot imagine a scenario in which I wouldn't take max loans out. It's NYC and I'm still in my 20's...
