Is this for real? I can't believe that on-campus is a good deal anywhere, let alone in Manhatten.

I'm a bit late to the party--I deferred a year and forgot about law school for a good six months.

Congrats to all the new admissions! Look forward to seeing you in the fall.

I am a bit late as well. I was accepted a while ago (ed), but figured I'd say hello. I am currently doing a MA Economics at NYU and live nearby campus. I'll be popping over to one of the Admitted Students Days events (most likely the first one), so will hopefully meet some of you all there.

Are you a multi-millionaire?

Not only not cheaper, but not possible! The entire village is now NYU housing.

Not really, but I think the people talking about living off campus are talking about East Village or Brooklyn, both places where it is possible to live more cheaply or not share an apartment.

Is the east village the same as the lower east side?

(on a similar note I think this thread might devolve into really embarrassing questions about basic NYC geography)

nevermind i should just look a map when I have dumb questions they're completely separate neighborhoods

Not so dumb a question. The East Village is above the LES, which itself is slowly being engulfed by Chinatown. To the East of the EV is Alphabet City (avenues A-D)--a bit less safe due to substantial public housing on Avenue D and a bit farther from the subway, but definitely a cheap option still relatively convenient to NYU. I've been living in the city since 2005 and am happy to answer any housing/city-related questions as best as I'm able.

Is craigslist the best bet for looking at places in that area?

Yes.

A way to make CL a little bit more manageable for NYC renting is to really narrow down what you are looking for--if you want your own place, look in apts or sublets, if you want roommates look in rooms/shares, run a search for "grad students" in any category, etc. etc.

Also, don't live in the LES for NYU, live in Brooklyn!

So before I start doing any real research.. is the ls housing that much more expensive then something you can find on your own (if I'm looking for a one bedroom not far from the ls)?

Edit - just saw your answer to this linzer

Full disclosure: I grew up in NYC, so I am much more comfortable with the different neighborhoods and the craigslist hunt then someone who is moving here for the first time (don't know anything about you, client!). That being said, I can't imagine paying to live in the ls housing, when there are SO many other options, and not all in crazy busy/UG-filled neighborhoods.

Fuller disclosure: I am considering staying in Brooklyn even if I attend CLS, which is completely bananas, so take everything I say about commute times, etc. with a grain of salt.

Yeah I've only been to NYC a handful of times. I was thinking just do the ls housing for the first year, so I didn't have to deal with searching, commuting, etc.. then 2l and 3l get something else. Idk though. Guess I have to do someresearch and whatnot

Where in Brooklyn? Only time I lived in Brooklyn was when I lived in Dumbo for awhile. I might need to try a real neighborhood at some point lol.

For perspective's sake: I live in suburban NJ and commute to midtown East. (Moving for LS, obviously...)

  That is pretty nuts. I kept reading that as if you actually meant to type the bronx(not sure if that is more or less nuts).

Has anyone worked on pinpointing the week for notifications of finalist status on named scholarships?? I looked it up once and I remember it being the second half of february but I cant remember if it was the last week or second to last week.

Has anyone with a processed deposit been able to create their NYU email address or log into NYUHome? I changed the password for my NYU NetID but can't log into NYUHome.

No, I had (once again) spent an unknown & ridiculous amount of money at various bars the night before and did a quick check on my bank account that day, that's how I knew.
