I don't know the exact date, but it'll be sometime before school starts. You'll get half the money in August and it'll go straight to NYU to pay tuition, fees, and housing if you're doing student housing, and then the remainder will go to you (either check or direct deposit if they have that option) for you to pay rent/live on/buy alcohol.

Corrected your ordering there.

I think our first tuition payment is due before the loan disbursement--though I'm pretty sure they have an option to defer payment until the loan arrives which I've heard is the first week of school.

Yeah from what I heard, loans don't get distributed until like 10 days into classes, so consider yourself on your own until then..

so basically, if you want to move in early, you have to finance the first month of rent + expenses on your own... okay - well its good to know this now. (i take it places don't like to rent out to you, if you tell them you can't pay until your loans come in...).

Yes exactly. Although some landlords are okay with you showing them a copy of your loans and when they are being disbursed.. so I've heard.

But basically the advice I got was be prepared with enough $ to get you through 1 month COL

http://www.nyu.edu/bursar/loans.awards/ ... redit.html

"Your statement will show an anticipated credit for a federal student loan if you have applied for one prior to the last two weeks and if you qualify according to federal regulations."

I don't know how this is going to work with the early move-ins (you may have to pay that separately) and obviously it isn't going to make off-campus housing easy. The loan disbursement date last year was Aug 23rd so I'd imagine it would be around then this year too.

If the 23rd holds roughly true, the funds will disburse at some point during orientation or the first week of school, then NYU cuts you a check for anything in excess of your NYU bill, so I'd imagine you get it a week or two after classes actually start.

It looks like the early move in charges may be applied to your NYU account (since the cancellation charge applies there), but contact housing to know for sure.

I'm already worried about how I'm going to pay for my books without any loan money...

My savings are absolute crap.

I'm now more glad that I managed to land some work for the summer.

Thing is, though, if they've been doing this for years now, there should be some way to make it through without permanently messing with things, even if you're not going to have that much money coming in.

Put everything on your credit card and pay it all off when your loans are disbursed?

America is awesome.

Yo dogg, I heard you like debt, so we gave you a credit card with your loan disbursements so you can have debt while you have debt

Once you hit 6 figures of debt, a hundred here and there isn't that big of a deal, right? Right? RIGHT?

And I miss the Pimp My Ride meme, thank you for that.
