No not at all, in fact thats what a lot of people were doing. I would stay past the lunch because the food is good and it'll give you a chance to talk to profs, and the afternoon events are informative and interesting but none of it is required or anything. Watching the profs present on a special topic in contemporary legal issues was interesting tho and I think its important to get a sense of what the faculty is like at a law school.

I feel like all of us doing both should just do it as a unit for continuity's sake.

For those who are thinking of deferring this year, I'm matriculating this year after a one year deferral.

I got a chance to speak with the administrator at last year's ASW and I left with the impression that there isn't really a value judgment on what you do during a deferral, maybe just that you spent the time well. To paraphrase, they want you to be able to decide when you are ready to enroll. She mentioned examples of people who had jobs to continue, or internships, or even just wanted to travel the world, etc. It's definitely in your interest to have a good plan though, makes for less anxiety overall. The cost was a $500 deposit with everyone else, $300 to defer, and maybe another one this summer.
There is also a readmission process, contacted in mid-January with all of the paperwork due in mid-February. It's basically a statement/letter of your activities since the deferral, a recommendation letter from current employer/professor, and a couple of forms. I'm expecting my enrollment packet soon, though that isn't to say I haven't at times been nervous about getting unadmitted or forgotten somehow in the last year. Also for what it's worth, I wasn't doing anything particularly grand or noble over my deferral period.

Did anybody else get an invitation to a CLS admitted students reception in San Francisco and Los Angeles next week?

Hi all - I asked about this in the financial aid forum too, but is anyone else thinking about trying to negotiate aid using an NYU package, and if so, are you going to do it before we hear back from CLS?

Seriously, don't wait. Asked and answered in many threads, but mainly see: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=131285&p=4157092#p4157092

All the same, do we have any idea when CLS usually sends out aid offers?

Does that include merit? Or does all merit go out with acceptances?

This was answered (by me) a few pages back and several times in the Columbia 1Ls Taking Questions thread. I'd help you out but I'm out for the night - do a search, tho.

Ok so those of you attending ASW, where are you staying? I'm debating emailing one of the students to see if I can crash their. Or are you guys doing hotels?

My boyfriend is in Newark so I guess I could just take the subway to the path as well. Harrumph.

CLS's official line is that merit (the named schollys, aka butler and hamilton) go out w acceptances and everything else is need based. but by need they really mean a combo of how much YOU need + how much they need your #s i think, because i have heard they do respond to matching from schools like NYU. (... at least i'm pretty sure this is how it works)

Unfortunately the dean's scholly at NYU expires April4 SOOOO... if CLS isn't sending out anything til early April... idk what to do >.>

I stayed with a student host during ASW I.

I would recommend it as long as you don't mind sleeping on a couch or inflatable mattress (at least in my experience. Though it was a VERY comfortable couch). It also gives you an opportunity to see the law school apartments, and to hang out with the law students, see how they live.

Have you asked CLS what they can do in light of your circumstances?

Yes, I got mine. No PID# though, just the CUID. I was able to activate my email address and everything.

Curious about the emails, whats the format? My undergrad was our initials followed by four random digits which I didn't like

E-mail CLS FinAid and tell them about the deadline.

Sadly, CLS has the same e-mail format (initials + four random numbers @columbia.edu). However, you can get an additional vanity of your first.lastname@law.columbia.edu, which will route to your "real" CLS address.
