I have a sneaking suspicion I'll be able to pick you out at orientation.Flips88 wrote:6'8" ~300ish. Hoping to get down to 275 eventually...
I actually feel ya on the lack of pickup games, I was water polo all through high school...homestyle28 wrote:Today's discussion adds to my long list of things people should tell you when you choose wrestling over basketball in Jr. High: Nobody every "pickup" wrestles. But if we form an IM team, I'm down for being the spunky 6th man who comes off the bench to play pesky D with fouls to give But my old man body will likely only hold up for about half a season!
For about 30 seconds, I considered looking into joining NU's club crew team (I rowed 2 years in UG)...and then I came to my senses.Flustercluck wrote:I actually feel ya on the lack of pickup games, I was water polo all through high school...homestyle28 wrote:Today's discussion adds to my long list of things people should tell you when you choose wrestling over basketball in Jr. High: Nobody every "pickup" wrestles. +1 for lack of pick up games being a hs "lax bro." A lot of indoor leagues are getting going in the midwest (I don't know about Chicago) but there's resally no sport that gives you the ability to just decide to head to the gym or the courts and join a decent game that bball provides.Flustercluck wrote:I actually feel ya on the lack of pickup games, I was water polo all through high school...homestyle28 wrote:Today's discussion adds to my long list of things people should tell you when you choose wrestling over basketball in Jr. High: Nobody every "pickup" wrestles. What's on everyones to-do list this summer?
Why? Too time consuming? I rowed for a year (study abroad, wasn't good enough to row for my UG) and loved it. Was looking into boat clubs in Chicago...rinkrat19 wrote:For about 30 seconds, I considered looking into joining NU's club crew team (I rowed 2 years in UG)...and then I came to my senses.Flustercluck wrote:I actually feel ya on the lack of pickup games, I was water polo all through high school...homestyle28 wrote:Today's discussion adds to my long list of things people should tell you when you choose wrestling over basketball in Jr. High: Nobody every "pickup" wrestles. Way too much work, way too much time, and I was a LOT fitter 12 years ago, the last time I picked up an oar. I'd have a hell of a time keeping up with infant undergrad rowers now. Although it would be fun to tell the kids stories about that one time my freshman year when we beat unbeatable Cal...Aine wrote:Why? Too time consuming? Yeah I rowed in England and it was one of those everyone-does-it-so-you-don't-have-to-be-that-good kind of thing. I miss being out on the water though. Maybe we can find a boathouse and go sculling sometime?rinkrat19 wrote: Way too much work, way too much time, and I was a LOT fitter 12 years ago, the last time I picked up an oar. Plus, 6am practices? No thanks. My UG was one of the few crew teams anywhere that didn't have to practice at dawn. I am not a morning person.

Hopefully I'll find an ice rink where I can at least play some pickup hockey or whack a puck around, if not join a league.
I'll have to think about the sculling...I spent most of my time in an eight and was never very good at pairs! Maybe in warm weather when we wouldn't mind falling in.Aine wrote:Yeah I rowed in England and it was one of those everyone-does-it-so-you-don't-have-to-be-that-good kind of thing. Also I can't skate to save my life but LOVE HOCKEY. Partial to the Bruins but really want to see the Blackhawks play. Interested?
Hey Upton, welcome to the thread!Upton Sinclair wrote:Withdrew from Penn and will be putting down my deposit at NU tomorrow. Tough decision, but I'm confident I made the right move. Excited to be joining this thread.
As someone who has spent a lot of time in West Philly, I say good choice!FredFlinstone wrote:Hey Upton, welcome to the thread!Upton Sinclair wrote:Withdrew from Penn and will be putting down my deposit at NU tomorrow. Mind if I ask how you decided to withdraw from Penn and attend Northwestern?
It's great from like April till October. then really shitty from November to March.lawandi wrote:Am I insane for wanting to bring a road bike with me to Chicago? I want to exercise by riding the bike trail alongside Lake Michigan. How bad is Chicago weather, really?
My understanding is that there are lots of rider friendly trails/paths, both throughout town and along the lake. But like flips said, you'll pack it away from Nov-March, unless you're a serious cold/windy weather riderFlips88 wrote:It's great from like April till October. then really shitty from November to March.lawandi wrote:Am I insane for wanting to bring a road bike with me to Chicago? Its not exactly a "locker room" as much as a room that haslockers lining one wall. You will share a locker with another student from your year. THere are lots of microwaves and I believe two fridges in the room as well as some places to sit. Don't believe there were showers.rinkrat19 wrote:Did anyone's tour include (or can a current student describe) the student locker room? I know there's a place with lockers, but where is it and what is it like? Is there any sort of handy place to eat lunches from home, like with a microwave or perhaps even a fridge, or do you just use an ice pack to keep it cold and eat in the atrium? Are there showers, or is it strictly a books-and-coats locker room, not a changing room?
Awesome, thanks. I wasn't actually expecting fridges or microwaves, so that's neat.splitmuch wrote:Its not exactly a "locker room" as much as a room that haslockers lining one wall. Thanks. I chose NU because I want to avoid NYC post-graduation if at all possible, and I love Chicago. Plus, NU was my top choice at the beginning of the cycle, so I'm more than happy to accept a late offer.FredFlinstone wrote:Hey Upton, welcome to the thread!

I willl be bringing my bike and will definitely ride with whoever is going out! I have a few moderately cold weather bike clothes too, so i will try to stretch the season out as much as possiblelawandi wrote:Am I insane for wanting to bring a road bike with me to Chicago? Ahh okay, cool! I really hope we can get some people together during orientation week and play a few games!Upton Sinclair wrote:Thanks. As for basketball, I'll play the 2. Our 3 will have to be able to stretch the floor though because I can't shoot from deep unless I'm wide open. On the plus side, I can slash and get to the basket and distribute a bit, plus I can run for days. So maybe I'm more of the 6th man type?
Do you still play polo? We should start a team.Flustercluck wrote:I actually feel ya on the lack of pickup games, I was water polo all through high school...homestyle28 wrote:Today's discussion adds to my long list of things people should tell you when you choose wrestling over basketball in Jr. High: Nobody every "pickup" wrestles.
