Re: Northwestern Law Class of 2014
I don't know what to do--I really want to attend NU, but I got a full ride to UIUC. I'm just going to have to sleep on this a bit. I said I'd do anything to attend NU, but wow, that's a shitload of debt. (Insert deep breath here.)

I think you've got to compare career prospects/desires (PI, Biglaw, etc.) with placement, LRAP and the like. What's COL at UIUC over and above tuition? 15k?SMA22 wrote:I don't know what to do--I really want to attend NU, but I got a full ride to UIUC. I'm just going to have to sleep on this a bit. I know for me, that when I settled on NU, I was heavily influenced by running the LRAP calculations (on their finaid page)...that 200k in debt, will really cost me less than 60k for 10 years, then poof, it's gone...presuming I stick with the PI/Gov't route...and on average I like my chances of finding a decent paying gig in Chicago if I abandon the PI route....but that's just me.

I am in the same situation. I am leaning towards SMU or UIUC (both full rides). I am visiting all of them in the next couple weeks to make sure, but free tuition is hard to pass up.SMA22 wrote:I don't know what to do--I really want to attend NU, but I got a full ride to UIUC. The "It's really only 60k" is a mantra I have to repeat to my wife constantly!

Will one of you play my overindulgent husband who tells me, "Honey, do whatever you like best! I support you 100%--if I don't, I know I'll be sleeping on the sofa for the next month"?

It's true, when you compare the debt to support ratio, NU wins hands downSMA22 wrote:Gee, now how could I possibly turn down that much debt with so much support? Yeah exactly. Excited because I love NU but pretty scared of the massive, soul-crushing debt.Eugenie Danglars wrote:I'm in rural China...so maybe?Bumi wrote:Are you somewhere cool? Soooo, looks like I'm in with the sticker paying crowd. Not that it's exactly surprising, I just wish I'd gotten something so I could justify leaving my job earlier... 110 more days, 110 more days, 110 more days....
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
