So heres a Question for everyone:

I was admitted to UVA ED. I scored way under my PT scores on LSAT test day, but didnt want to stress about re-taking.

I have heard that i can re-take the lsat (I would next june or october) and use it as leverage for scholly money. Is this true? It would be nice since even if i do poorly again it cannot hurt me as i already have my acceptance. I have a 4.0 GPA, and would hope to get a 170-171 (at least this is likely with another 6-8 months of study (not rigorous since i already have an acceptance).

Is this true? What would happen if i got a 167-169 (my old PT range with RC destroying me everytime)?

What would happen if i got a 170?

With a 4.0 and a 171 (both at or above 75th%) would i be guaranteed a great scholly?

Any serious advice would be great

Oh, also, i am planning to Defer for one year in any case, and was told on the phone that it would be approved.

Uh, how do you have "leverage" when you're locked into an ED contract?

Hmm, i actually heard that you are still considered equally for scholarships (i know this probably isnt true).

But i mean realistically, if i hit the 168-171 then i could withdraw my acceptance and apply to T-6 schools (with a 4.0, and good softs) and i think just the thought of that would get them to try to get you to stay right? Because you are only bound if you accept the acceptance, as soon as you withdraw it you just lose your acceptance.

At least this is the impression i am under.

You can't withdraw once you ED, the only way u can go to another school would be to sit out a year. Please don't be a moron and try to get out of the ED contract.

Yeah, I agree with Jaws. People who retake for leveraging purposes are probably people that got in RD, and want to increase their chances at other schools or get money.

You should have thought about this before applying ED... it can't look good to get out of your contract because you decided after the fact that you wanted money or more prestige.

This is suprising to hear, i wouldnt want to get out of the contract, i would just like to be considered for the Scholarship. I dont want to sound like a moron, but i am under the impression that everyone is considered equally (so they say), and i heard about this retaking for leverage from someone else who was admitted ED and asked Mr. dugas or Trujillo how likely he was for a scholarship (he had a 3.92 with a 169) and he said he was told if he re-took and got above a 170 it was very likely since he would then be above both medians. He was also admitted ED.

Like i said i am planning on defering for a year, and i would not leave UVA for lets say Columbia, but if i did hit a great score and got no scholly i guess i could withdraw and re-apply for the class of 2015 (i am assuming UVA would auto-ding me for what i had done though) so that wouldnt really work either...

You had best check the terms of you ED and make sure that you can sit out and then re-apply. Law schools talk and it may not go well for you if you do this. Make sure you check it out first. also, they do not have a very great incentive to give $$ to people who are already bound to attend, scholarships are to lure people to the school...

Good point, i guess i just heard the idea, and thought that it would be great to take a pressure free LSAT, if i hit my peak maybe get some scholarship money.

I did hear this from a pretty legit source, i just wish there was a way to clarify if it would even be worth my time. I guess i could e-mail/call Dugas and see what he has to say.

Like i said i dont want to get away from UVA in any way, i would just love the opportunity to earn some scholarship money. But i would hate to study hard, get a 171+ and not be awarded any scholarship money.

This could be and should be easily clarified with one email to the admissions office.

+1. i'm sure they'd be delighted to have an ED applicant go above both medians, and i wouldn't be surprised to hear that they'd incentivize it with a few bucks. they're also supposed to be pretty big on giving ED acceptances cash same as if they were RD (quite a few ED applicants last year got cash) and it's in their best interests to maintain a reputation for dealing fairly with ED applicants. i don't think it's a good idea to think of leverage in terms of your walk away value (getting cash at mich or whatever), but you should definitely remember that you're in a pretty good position to become one of the mouthpieces of the university, and they want to keep those mouthpieces happy.

So anyone on here admitted RD yet? My app was received on September 14th, went complete on 9/22; anyone got any idea when I might hear a decision? I visited shortly before submitting my app, and I was told they don't like to hold applications for too long, but that's such an unclear answer, and I'm antsy as hell about all of this.

Soo... someone should start a thread in the appropriate forum and put applicant questions there.

Honestly I think there is no chance that you hear back before late December. They aren't going to admit people before even the October LSAT results are out.

Hey guys! I'm really hoping to be able to going you soon. I just submitted my application this morning (even though I mailed my ED form and residency application last Friday). I'm so so nervous, especially watching all y'all get in, I hope there's still room for me.
Because people seem curious, I've got a 3.55 and a 175. Do I have a chance?
Also, I'm a resident from the NoVa area, Alexandria to be specific, I see that a lot of y'all are too. I'm so excited!

Unless MSNBC did a special on you, covering your former job as a puppy murderer there is an approximately 300% chance u are accepted.

Congrats

I got in ED 3 days before the December LSAT. They told me to feel free to take it anyway and recommended I did saying that if my score went up it would help my scholarship chances even though I was locked in. I understand they don't really have an incentive to, but that's what I was told. My score didn't go up so I can't tell you what the outcome would be if you improve, but I was explicitly told higher scores would be considered even if you were accepted ED. I can't speak to the you deferring next year withdrawal stuff.

You will be a perfect test for whether ED admits are considered for scholarships. I think you would get money if you applied RD.

Darn it! I knew that was going to come back to haunt me some day. I never should have let them talk me into filming it...

I've decided to go all in for UVA by ED'ing before I get my LSAT score back.
Do you think I should mention in my "Why Virginia" essay that I've decided not to try gaming the LSAT numbers game, which is arguably more advantageous overall, 'cause that's how much I wanna go to this school? Or do you think it's overkill; that this fact will be a given under the circumstances? (It would only be a given if they assumed that I was aware of the LSAT game. Do they assume this as a rule with applicants?)

Im confused, so you dont have an LSAT score at all? or is this a retake? if you dont have a score then they dont care, cause they dont know what your score range is. They will wait till they have your score to even look at it, you should wait till you have a score to ED

If you know that U.Va is your top choice school then go ahead and send in the ED form before you get your LSAT score back but I wouldn't bother mentioning that in your "Why Virginia?". They know you're all in from the fact that you turned in the form. If you want to make an impression beyond that showing just how enthusiastic you are about attending, you'd probably be better served to just go there and meet them all in person. That way they have a face to attach to your application as well.
