Re: UVA Class of 2014
I posted this in the Ask a UVA 2L questions thread, but I'll re-post it here in case some of you don't venture on over there:
For the soon-to-be 1Ls: I think this should be a list of the schedules/professors for the different sections. You won't know which section you're in until right before orientation, but until then you can sit around and decide which section you'd like to be in. CivPro/Contracts/Torts are 4 credits, Crim is 3.

If you include the Spring professors, I'd say:
Best sections: A, L
Middle sections: C, D, F, G, H
Worst sections: B, E, I, J, K

Not sure about the other two profs, but Section I looks tough with Alex Johnson and Caleb Nelson. Good profs, but probably on the more difficult side.

Tough is much, much better than bad, however. In my opinion at least. Being well-taught a huge amount of material is more pleasant than trying to teach yourself a large amount. People may disagree on that, I suppose.desertlaw wrote:Not sure about the other two profs, but Section I looks tough with Alex Johnson and Caleb Nelson. To make it useful, switch to week view at the top. The classes are one section per week, starting the week of 21st August. Let me know if you spot an error.

Re: UVA Class of 2014
Those schedules all look better than the one I had. I think it must be because most have 2 classes that are 3x/week at 80 minutes long. I much prefer those to the shorter, 4x/week classes.albanach wrote:Thanks again for this.5ky wrote:I posted this in the Ask a UVA 2L questions thread, but I'll re-post it here in case some of you don't venture on over there:

Edit: Yes, I knew it. Most sections appear to have 13 classes a week, while I had 15.

It would definitely be disputed that Johnson is a good professor, some like him but a lot don't. He also gives closed book exams which some people might not like.desertlaw wrote:Not sure about the other two profs, but Section I looks tough with Alex Johnson and Caleb Nelson. Awesome, thanks for this. I really hope I get one of the sections with no Monday morning class. Would rather have 8:30 3x a week then 8:50 4x.albanach wrote:Thanks again for this.5ky wrote:I posted this in the Ask a UVA 2L questions thread, but I'll re-post it here in case some of you don't venture on over there:

Ditto...desertlaw wrote:Beer Run's nachos are amazing and the beer selection is pretty solid. I have shared both with TLS's Doritos and hope to soon again. Also worth visiting is Blue Mountain Brewery outside of town (about 20-25 min from Ivy apartments). And plenty of good wineries nearby worth checking out as well.
And no one wanted to put Little John's on the sandwich/late night list? That place has amazing sandwiches and are usually making serious late-nite cash. They are no BellAir Market, but still solid.
I am convinced there is no sandwich on this earth that is more perfect than BellAir's Farmington on a breezy April day in Cville.
When people get in town they need to track down the Blue Mountain - Full Nelson IPA. That stuff is extremely good. I will say that Harris Teeter remodeled and in doing so appeared to cut down their selection of beer. If you want to run wild, the beer and wine warehouse on 29 is the place to go. Just don't buy anything by 21st amendment because it tastes like old cow. YMMV.
Also, the bar food at Miller's is good. It is just bar food but it's solid.
I have a locker right in front of ScoCo and I'm convinced that's the way to go.
I'm also surprised Section C's lineup is not getting more love. Maybe it's because Sprigman can be divisive. Also, Hynes didn't teach contracts to 1Ls this year. Something he mentioned several times in the classes he did teach. He will be back with a vengeance for teaching contracts to 1Ls this year. That's intel you can't get just anywhere.
I think generally profs want to teach 1Ls. I asked a prof about this in a question like "Don't profs love to teach 1Ls because they get to see a legal educational journey of discovery and intellectual awareness!?!??!"
He told me profs like to teach 1Ls because they do their reading and come to class. *shrug*

Heytens didn't teach during the '08-09 or '09-10 school year so the only people who would really know anything about him are in the class of 2013.
Sprigman has developed a reputation for assigning too much reading so he's fallen from the great reputation he used to have.

Haha, this is definitely true. With the exception of the gunner courses (e.g. federal courts, Nelson's legislation), the vast majority of 2Ls really don't care about their classes. He told me profs like to teach 1Ls because they do their reading and come to class. *shrug*

I think current? Not 100% sure though because I had both my permanent and current address as the same thing. But most of their communications are through email.flexityflex86 wrote:which address does UVA mail to? current or perm?

Not sure about which address UVA mails to, but sure that their communications are almost exclusively through email (and acceptances are by phone call). The only thing UVA would mail is the acceptance packet, which would follow the acceptance phone call (and during that phone call you could always give them the address you want the letter mailed to).flexityflex86 wrote:hmmmm you sure?

So there's been some talk of beer, but I'm wondering about my other favorite vice. Does anybody know of a good cigar shop in Cville?

Not that I partake, but I thought good cigars (at least those manufactured in the past half-century) were illegal in the US?Gecko of Doom wrote:So there's been some talk of beer, but I'm wondering about my other favorite vice. Does anybody know of a good cigar shop in Cville?
That said, there's at least three tobacconists. I'm sure you'll find something.

Re: UVA Class of 2014
Incoming transfer from W&L here, so I obviously can't comment on any of the full-time UVA profs. I can tell y'all that Spencer, who is visiting from W&L this year, is a CivPro mastermind. He's very tough and kind of intimidating, but honestly I couldn't imagine taking that god forsaken class with anyone else.5ky wrote:I posted this in the Ask a UVA 2L questions thread, but I'll re-post it here in case some of you don't venture on over there:

A few observations:
I'll leave it to others more knowledgeable, but for professor picks, it looks like section A has a pretty great draw. Mitchell/Coughlin/Choi is a powerhouse trio.

YMMV.
Full Nelsons are worth taking a few 6-packs in your suitcase to your summer destination. At least I thought so.
I found the warehouse on 29 about 2 weeks before spring finals. Will definitely be a regular customer for 2L & 3L.

Well, (allegedly) fantastic cigars are illegal in the US. Good ones can still be had.albanach wrote:Not that I partake, but I thought good cigars (at least those manufactured in the past half-century) were illegal in the US?Gecko of Doom wrote:So there's been some talk of beer, but I'm wondering about my other favorite vice. Does anybody know of a good cigar shop in Cville?

Long time lurker, first time poster.
Quick question for the rising 2Ls and 3Ls. I ordered one of the MacBook Pros from CAV. Will I be able to use the ExamSoft software within Mac or do I need to look into running Windows through Boot Camp, Parallels, etc.?
Many thanks in advance.
