Thanks! Apparently my parents aren't expected to contribute anything. I thought this was for everyone though since grad students are considered independent. You don't even have to submit parental info. I guess if you submit the need access they have it.

Right, well EFC can also include Student contribution, and in my case they apparently have a really optimistic view of my resources.

I think unless you had a pell grant in undergrad it is unlikely that you will get need based aid.

Edit: I have negative equity and didn't get anything.

I think EFC includes you. Like, your expected personal contribution (if you are the only person in your household, independent.) Michigan said they would ignore the parent section on NeedAccess even if it was completed.

You get it in grad plus or private. Michigan doesn't have an EFC from what I understand. They don't look at parental income when deciding, or so they claim.

Guys hold up -- Michigan does have an EFC line in the award eligibility summary. In my case, the EFC is MY contribution, which is definitely not in line with reality. As they determine "remaining aid" by subtracting EFC, scholly money, and Stafford eligibility from the total COA amount, I am worried that this means that I would have to borrow the EFC in private loans as opposed to in grad plus (which was my original plan). I guess the more accurate question is if "remaining aid" is the same as the grad plus eligible amount or not.

The EFC is the federal government amount. You don't actually have to pay that.

I'm also interested in this, but I imagine the only way to find out is to talk to financial aid directly.

In my case, I could probably find a way to contribute the amount they estimated for 1L year, but after that there's no way I can be on the hook for that much money. I would need GradPlus loans.

I think is pretty high as to what they expect you to personally contribute but you can take loans put no matter what your efc is. You might not get subsidized stafford loans though.

If I am reading this correctly...

Total COA - Federal EFC = Estimated Need

They cannot give you Stafford Loans that would get your aid package above the estimated need. The only way that estimated need number matters is that it might limit Stafford eligibility if you have a big scholarship.

Hmm. Maybe. I do still wonder about the "remaining need" idea (it's in the notes at the bottom) and where that figures in... Grad Plus eligibility would make sense, but I suppose in the end this is a question best asked/answered at Umich Fin Aid and not TLS :-)

Not cool. This year we have Quade and a mentally stable Zambrano (not to mention that we're going to sign Pujols next season) so I like our chances. For now, we'll enjoy our beloved Bulls. 8)

For what it is worth, I'm a cubs fan through my wife. That was the chant thrown at us by the Nationals fans.

I maintain my other Washington fanships. Washington Redskins, Washington Capitols, and Chicago Cubs.

They're the Capitals, even though it's the US Capitol Building.

But you wouldn't let a a Toronto fan call his team the Maple Leaves.
