If transferring from Fordham, would it matter whether you are top 5% PT or top 5% FT?

Part time you won't have earned enough credits to transfer after your 1L year.

Besides the top 5% at Fordham should get you hired at any of the firms you would probably want. If you're looking for more name recognition or prestige...that's a different question.

How does transferring hurt your career prospects? This is an honest question.

I hope the author of the forum reads this. I've seen several "No" comments on here. I have a friend who was top 5% at UF, not even Fordham, but UF, who just got accepted on transfer to NYU and Columbia--took 75% to Georgetown.

If you go to Fordham and do well, transfering will be no problem.

Bump... What's the thought on transferring from Fordham to Georgetown? what about Columbia / NYU?

What are your grades? Fordham is a pretty stellar school. I'd say as low as top 20-25% would have a shot at GULC.

And still, your GPA/rank is needed to assess.

I'd say no then. Shoot for NYU/Columbia but otherwise stay put if you want NYC biglaw. GULC is a wash.

He believes down the road all that will matter are his merits as a lawyer and that out the gate he can get the same job as a Columbia/NYU grad.

It's hypothetical for your neighbor too considering that our spring grades have not been released yet. That being said, unless he really went down second semester, a definite possibility, he should have a good shot at nyu or columbia. Not so much HYS unless he does even better this semester.

Don't go to GULC. You'll be competing against the top 1/3 of the class plus 100 transfers. Top 10% at Fordham is much better.

Your rank may be better than you suppose. By my records, top 10% last year was 3.57... You will have excellent options at Fordham with a 3.7, even in the present rather frightening economy. Any decision to transfer is complicated and personal, and will depend a lot on you, but if you want NYC biglaw, you obviously have a strong case for staying.

Re: Top 5% Fordham-->Georgetown:

1.) If you get Law Review at Fordham and not at Georgetown, Answer = No, without regard to ANY OTHER CONSIDERATIONS. You will be negatively impacting your job prospects in every market.

2.) If you get LR at Fordham AND Georgetown, Answer = No, unless you want to practice outside of NYC. If you want to practice outside of NYC, then this may be a good move. May. If you want to practice in NYC, top 5% with LR at Fordham > Georgetown

3.) No LR at Fordham (is it 100% write-on?), LR at Georgetown: Transfer

4.) No LR at either: Same as #3, except that, if it was a "tossup in favor of transfer" before, it is probably a "tossup in favor of don't transfer" now.

5.) -- You're going to get in to better schools than Georgetown. In fact, I would be amazed if you don't get in to NYU/Columbia. I would be surprised if you don't get Harvard. Obviously: If Harvard, yes, period. If NYU/Columbia and LR at Fordham... probably transfer. NYC firms will still respect the Fordham cachet, non-NYC firms will take you far more seriously. If Chicago... depends whether you want to practice in NYC or not. Honestly I probably wouldn't give up LR/Top 5% at Fordham to go to UChicago, if your focused on the NYC market. If you want to work elsewhere though, def. transfer. If you get LR at Chicago, def. transfer (FYI, write-on for Chicago starts in a little over a week or two for EVERYONE, whether you've been accepted or not: same goes for Harvard and, I think, Columbia)

No point in transferring from top 5% Fordham unless you want academia, really.

any idea when we're getting grades? I haven't gotten any besides LRW. I guess I'll just have to get LORs now and hope I do well

also I agree, fordham+LR, I would probably stay except for HY
if no LR, I would go to CN
that's what I'm planning at least

TITCR.

Why would you ever transfer as top 5% at Fordham to NYU or Columbia. That is really quite a ridiculous decision.

Not for a loooong time, I am guessing. Just LRW for me, too.

yeah, my plan is to wait until grades come out and then decide. if i do really well i'll stay. if i do really poorly i won't apply. somewhere in between and i'll apply.
