T10 to HYS

Hi, what grades would it take for someone at a T7-T10 school (one of Penn, UVA, Berkeley, Michigan) to transfer to HYS? Based on past TLS threads, it seems like top 25% or so is sufficient. However, based on the recent ABA 509 reports, it seems like HYS have been accepting only students with around a 3.9 from T14 schools -- 3.9 from T14 would probably be top 5%, which is far from top 25%.

Personally, I'm hovering at around a 3.7-3.8 and am wondering what it'll take to transfer to HYS. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You don't need a 3.9 to transfer from T10 to H. You might need that (or better) for Y.

Thanks. Any idea what I'll need from T10 for H and S?

Dude, this is all available on 509 forms. This year, the average Yale transfer GPA was a 4.05. 50th percentile for Stanford was 3.88. Harvard was 3.94 (surprising). Google HYS 509 form. Spend less time daydreaming about transferring and more studying.

I spend every hour studying. Posting here isn't daydreaming, it's getting more information to calculate my odds -- for the sake of planning out backup plans for clerkships, dual degree programs, targeting specific markets this summer, etc.

Why would you want to transfer to Harvard if you're already doing well at a top school?

Academia, clerkships, long-term geographic preferences, and various other academic and personal reasons.

I'm not here to debate whether transferring is the right move for me. I just want some advice/information from those who have knowledge about transferring from T14 to HYS apart from the 509 reports.

Not sure which past threads you are reading that indicate 25% is sufficient. It rarely, if ever, is for this type of transfer.

Top 10% is usually what you need for a good shot. For YS it's more like top 5%. Some people might get in with lower stats, but they are exceptions and not the rule.

Stop worrying about the numerical gpa. It's all about your class rank.

What if your T10 doesn't rank?

Aside from the possible exception of dual degree programs (which is a weird thing to care about once you're already a law student), those things don't depend on transferring.

Relax. And stop spending every hour studying.

Not a helpful response. Considering transferring is not necessarily daydreaming.

I can only speak for H, but the students who transferred from T10 mostly were not the very top students (top 3% or so). Those types usually stick with their original school. I can't really say whether top 10% or top 15% is sufficient. but that seems to be about the right range, and I believe top 25% is likely too low. Of course, it will depend on other factors as well (prior work experience, softs, etc.) Just do the best you can this semester and apply and see what happens.

It's amusing that you dismissed Yeezus's post as "not a helpful response" before concluding with essentially the same advice.

Though I see your point, at least I tried to answer OP's question. "Try to do well" isn't advice anyone would argue with.

you can usually figure out where you are plus or minus 5%. for instance, if your school has grade-on for law review, you can usually find out what the gpa cut off is for that and from there you can estimate what rank you are

Is there an advantage to applying before the June 15 deadline, or should I focus on grades and not worry about the applications until after finals. Thanks! :D

Plan to have your LORs submitted, personal statement written, and resume written by June 1st so by the time you get your last grade you can submit and have your transcripts sent

Why June 1 specifically? My grades will not be in until after June 1. But based on your advice, and unlike applying as a 0L, there's no inherent advantage to applying early, correct?

So you're sure to have everything ready for your final grades. I had my stuff done by early May (except one LOR)
