Transfer Advice (t4)

Hello,

I hope everyone's fall semester went well, and the hard work payed off.

I recently completed my first semester in law school (T4) and received a 3.63 GPA (Top 10%). Now I've developed a curiosity in transferring. What is the probability of being admitted as a 1L transfer to Alabama, Emory, and UT? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks for your time in advance and helping me explore this interest.

All the best,

CE

Look up ABA 509 reports and see what the median GPAs are for the schools you are applying to. That'll tell you a lot.

T4 is sometimes unpredictable b/c some schools seem to not be as friendly towards t4 transfers. It looks like you want the Southeast??? (If you want Texas, UT is a no-brainer).

I'd probably throw an app at Vandy,UT, Emory, and GULC. Not sure if transferring to Bama would be worth it (depending on your goals)... Vandy and GULC allow you to apply literally right now so you can have an answer (or be deferred) to regular decision. It would be nice to have an acceptance though. Besides those schools Duke/UVA are probably a stretch, but something to think about as well. (Along with the rest of the T14 depending on your preferences).

Top 10% from T4 probably not good enough for an EA acceptance. That said, can't hurt to throw one at Vandy or GULC. I'd focus on improving your grades (shoot for top 5% minimum), and weigh your options after second semester. (Also, that is not to say your grades aren't good; they are. Transferring is super competitive and T4 school adds a lot of unknowns.)

I was in a similarly position as you last year. 3.48 (barely top 10%) at a T4. Did much better second semester and transferred to T14. Study your ass off this semester and get closer to the top 5% and you'll be in decent shape. And while you're only exploring the idea, I hope you seriously consider it. Good luck.

So you went to GULC? How was it? Were you EA? Any general thoughts for someone is a somewhat comparable situation as OP.

Didn't apply EA. Same advice as OP. Certainly apply to EA if you are willing to sacrifice money (deposit) in case you get into better schools. But focus mainly on grades this semester, visit office hours to ensure you get LORs. You want to be closer to the top 5%, but you're in good shape if you have similar grades as OP. Just fix any test taking problems you had first semester, etc. In my case, I started studying a month earlier than I did my first semester. So around mid february. I would definitely transfer if you are in the position. Only exception might be if you are dead set on criminal defense or public interest (but even then you can take advantage of loan forgiveness).
