Can anyone speak to this topic but at NYU? Seems everyone is on a secondary journal at NYU since the write-on competition is used to either get onto law review, and if not, to your choice of secondary journal. I really don't want to do this write-on (sure i can suck it up for a week of summer) but what about during the school year when I actually need to do things for the journal?

Wouldn't I be better off just trying to get an externship or something real during the semester? I have below median grades which is the only reason I feel compelled to do journals for OCI, otherwise I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

This is the transfers forum, but to answer your question:

I did journal stuff and an externship during the semester. It is highly dependent upon the workload and your interest in the secondary. Since you're shooting for biglaw and you're below median, then you should probably try to get on a secondary. The externship would be after biglaw, and the externships are more helpful for public interest people, since BL doesn't care a lot about your law school work experience, except 1L summer, with regard to OCI.
