UF Law v Emory Law

Postby UFlaw99 » Thu Feb 12, 2015 8:05 pm

Hey everyone just wanted to get advice.

My situation:

I am a 2L at the only T4 in Atlanta, (AJMLS). I got accepted at UF Law at with in-state tuition and Emory Law at full price.
I do not want to work in California, New York, or DC the Southeast either Atlanta or Miami is fine for me. No preference for either Florida or Georgia legal markets.

Should I go to UF Law at $22k/yr or goto Emory Law at $50k per year especially when I do not want to work for Big Law. I would prefer to open up my own law firm and practice 1-2 years after graduation.

Thanks in Advance for the responses.

Where are you from originally? You should apply to UGA and go there, assuming you're from Georgia.

I applied to UGA and was rejected. I lived in both Florida and Georgia. Mostly in GA cause of high school and undergrad. So I would say Atlanta is home but Florida is close second.

idk what I would do in your shoes but I wouldn't go to FL and risk the (probably high) likelihood of striking out with no capital to start your own legal practice / no clientele base and experience

I also hesitate suggesting going $100k in debt for shaky odds at Emory's OCI as a transfer student

So I'll wait for the wiser audience

I went part-time so I completed 30 credit hours the equivalent of the first year for a full time student.

I just looked up AJMLS and realized that staying is not an option under any circumstances. What are all the ties you have to FL?

Here is my view, right now I am at T4 John Marshall in Atlanta and the next 2 years are going to cost me $70K. The next 2 years at UF law will cost $44k. Given the situation UF law is obviously a better choice than my T4 costing me $70k.

So the situation is if Emory Law a better option than UF because I cannot stay at my T4 which will cost me almost as much as Emory ($100k).

I have lived in the state for a couple of years in Fort Lauderdale. I have family and cousins in south florida and tampa. My brothers live in Fort Lauderdale but other than that no ties.

I would transfer but I have to be honest. That opinion is motivated entirely by these two songs:

If you want to go solo/dont want biglaw (and even if you did) Emory should not be an option. Way too expensive. Keep costs as low as possible.
