Thinking About Transferring? FYI

Postby AtypicalLawStudent » Tue Feb 18, 2014 10:05 pm

Last year I wasn't sure whether or not to transfer. I had a full tuition scholarship and didn't even have to pay for housing (housing grant). By the middle of my second semester it was quite clear I hated my school. I didn't hate law school, but I hated the area I was in and I hated the school's atmosphere, so I transferred. I was accepted to a Philadelphia-area law school even though I had a "low" GPA (lower than a 2.7) and I received a scholarship. Because I transferred, my GPA restarted and I now have a much higher one and I really love my school. I'm even getting opportunities and making contacts I would never have gotten from my 1L school.

So, what I'm saying is even if someone tries to discourage you from transferring, you should do it if you really want to be in your current situation.

Had to quote this anecdotal p.o.s. for posterity's sake.

Would love to hear what these "opportunities" are--2L SA gig? School-year law clerk gig? Judicial clerkship?

I'm actually currently working as a legal advocate at a public interest organization and this summer I have the opportunity to advocate at a law firm. At my 1L school they did not really do any outreach to local large and small firms for the students. It was really up to the students, which is fine. At my current law school they have relationships with many firms and public interest organizations. In addition, I have professors who are current partners at large firms, which is obviously quick and easy networking.
