I would think that the improved employment prospects would be worth 60,000.

Yeah thought as much on that. As much as I would love a six figure salary out of law school, I'm not expecting it at this point. But I don't mind working around with different routes and taking the longer road to get there.

I come from a pretty poor background (my families combined income has been less then $25,000 since I was in high school, even less now) and I've found my way here on my own. I know I can work the grind. I'm wondering if 10 years down the line, will my potential for growth be limited by staying at this school?

So far your school is in tier 3/4 and between 75-100, which doesn't make sense. If it is within top 100 give the tens range of the school.

Sorry I guess I was going off some bad information with the tier stuff. My school is ranked in the 70-90 range if that further clarifies.

I'm a 3L at Minnesota.

I think your chances at BigLaw are shot, sorry. Some students here get local BigLaw (which translates to about $100k-$120k starting salary, NOT $160k), and a smaller handful are able to get NY, Chicago, and other BigLaw, but the first group is almost exclusively first quartile students, and the second group is probably closer to top 5%-10% and many have ties to their out-of-state markets.

If you look at the LST numbers, you'll see that about 1/3 of UMN students don't get full-time, long-term, legal work.

At median, and if you network well locally, you still have a nice shot at state clerkships, some government jobs in rural areas, and smaller/medium law firms, but idk how that compares to your current school.

Definitely don't choose UMN if you're hoping to practice somewhere else. And as an out-of-state student, you will be asked about ties in interviews with Minnesota employers. I've seen transfers here do really well, but most of them came in with high grades from their TTT schools and they knew how to ace exams.

I really enjoy law school at UMN, but I earned high grades and networked like crazy, so I've got a positive outcome lined up. There are a lot of anxious students at UMN with mediocre/low grades and many won't be able to get a good job after we graduate. Don't put yourself in that situation, especially with the extra debt. Let me know if you'd like to know anything else.
