Re: Columbia 2012 Transfer Applicants
Just read through the 2010 CLS transfer thread. Apparently the status checker is plagued with problems. A lot of people got decisions before it actually went complete. Decisions started going out around this time, though (July 8th).
Let's hope people start hearing this week.

Same. Not worried though since they sent an e-mail saying I was 'complete.' Now we wait.mileslibertatis wrote:My transcript box never got checked, even though I went complete. It is still unchecked and the site itself says I am complete.

Re: Columbia 2012 Transfer Applicants
Missed this one. I did the LR competition. I didn't get a confirmation. In fact, I got an auto out-of-office reply, so I forwarded my packet to another editor and said the auto-reply made me nervous. He said "Got it" and that was the last I heard of them. I thought the competition was relatively easy, especially after completing Harvard's monster. But I did not get a call on the 3rd or on the 6th, which is when they were supposed to extend the offers. This can only mean that I did not succeed.Certiorari wrote:I have a couple of questions for anyone who did the write-on competition for transfer students applying to Columbia (I know at least one person in here participated):
1. Did you get a confirmation email from them when you submitted your write-on packet? I didn't, and didn't think anything of it at the time, but now I'm wondering. . .
2. Did anyone get an acceptance call from the law review? From what I have gleaned from reading this thread, CLS has yet to make any offers of admission to any potential transfer students, so I'm wondering if the law review is waiting until people have been admitted to extend offers.

Re: Columbia 2012 Transfer Applicants
Okay, yeah, that's all I got was the auto out-of-office reply. I know they were supposed to extend offers about a week ago, but I guess I'm just wondering if they're waiting to extend offers until people are admitted to the law school (as far as I can tell, no one has been admitted yet — am I right on that?). It would be kind of strange to get a "Congratulations, you're on law review!" phone call and subsequently get a "We regret to inform you that we cannot offer you admission" email from the law school.mileslibertatis wrote:Missed this one. BTW, my application finally went compete today. One of the boxes is still unchecked, but it says complete, and I talked to admissions the other day and they told me they'd received the item that was unchecked.

Re: Columbia 2012 Transfer Applicants
Yeah, no, I think we just didn't make it. I am pretty sure LR would have called us if we made the cut, and then admissions would have been a different decision. Like Harvard, Columbia LR says they inform admissions when you make it, so given our numbers, I think that would have guaranteed us a spot. But who knows.

Re: Columbia 2012 Transfer Applicants
FWIW, I think Cert's hypothesis seems more logical--e.g. maybe you did make a journal but they're withholding that decision until the admissions committee decides on your application. Like he said, it would be kind of odd to find out you made a CLS journal but didn't get into CLS. To that end, I do not think that writing on to a journal in their competition, even with stellar grades, guarantees admission.
Then again, I could be dead wrong haha
Anyway, for those of us who finally went 'complete' at the end of last week, think we'll get a decision by the end of the week? Seems unlikely unless you're on one end of the extreme (good/bad), but here's to hoping

It said in the packet the calls would come on July 3rd and then the make-up calls would come on or around July 6th. Maybe they say one thing and do another, but I think it is just as likely none of our happy asses made it.

I mean, they sent out a school-wide email with the names of next year's LR members (rising 2L here, not LR). Maybe they update it after they have transfer members who are accepted?mileslibertatis wrote:It said in the packet the calls would come on July 3rd and then the make-up calls would come on or around July 6th. I don't suppose there is a way to know if there are any transfers on it?

Re: Columbia 2012 Transfer Applicants
I think I'm starting to agree with mileslibertatis. I looked back at some stuff, and they did say that an offer from the review does not necessarily guarantee an offer of admission from CLS; that suggests that they may not be waiting until acceptances are sent out. They did say they'd make offers on the 3rd or thereabouts (contingent on the professors grading the submissions being finished by then). All things considered, including piccolittle's post subsequent to mine, I think mileslibertatis may be correct. I'll keep my fingers crossed, though, for myself and the other hopefuls!

Re: Columbia 2012 Transfer Applicants
I could literally search each name I don't recognize in the student directory...mileslibertatis wrote:I don't suppose there is a way to know if there are any transfers on it?
Which I just did (there weren't that many), and there are only two people who are available in the directory but don't have pictures. Is it possible that they were given an offer of admission with their LR offer? All I know is that we had to have a picture when we started last August.
Anyway, I need to stop lurking in the transfers thread, I have no idea what I'm doing here.

Last year was 7/13 and a huge batch. I think they make a bunch of decisions before and release a ton then. Very few decisions after. They are more T2 friendly than NYU and Penn, so lets hope for some good news.canesfan1986 wrote:Anybody think today will be the day we start hearing? I'm hopeful.

Re: Columbia 2012 Transfer Applicants
Is anyone else having a problem with the status checker? Mine says that my transcripts were not received, which of course is crazy because they're included in the CAS report. I applied the last week of June. Emailed admissions yesterday about it and haven't heard anything. I haven't yet received an email that my application is complete and it's starting to stress me out.

They take a good 2 weeks after they receive everything to process it.forestgirl wrote:Is anyone else having a problem with the status checker? Really? I thought NYU was also. Someone on this board got into Penn last year from my school but was ranked lower than me. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but I was pretty confident I would get into the schools I applied to, save for H, based on the past threads.TFR wrote:Last year was 7/13 and a huge batch. Well you are # 1, so yes, you probably will get into all. But I know CLS specifically takes top students from NY area T2 schools. I know people from NY area schools top 5-8% that got in. Looking at both the Penn and NYU threads, they basically took 90% T1 students thus far, and Penn's TLS profile page says they specifically prefer students from high ranked schools.canesfan1986 wrote:Really? Yeah it seems that Penn is more selective because of their smaller transfer class. Columbia and NYU take about three times more transfers, if I'm not mistaken.TFR wrote:Well you are # 1, so yes, you probably will get into all. From TLS threads Penn always took around 30. Keep in mind they accept alot more, and 30 end up attending.canesfan1986 wrote:

2010: CLS 78, NYU 45ish
2011: CLS 45ish, NYU 60ish.
I could be wrong, but I remember reading this. CLS cut its class size in half last year do to complaints from native students.

It seems hard to believe that Columbia listened to its students and gave up tuition money from transfers. I doubt people will stop attending just because they like transfers and the "natives" have more competition. But it could be true. What the hell do I know anyway?

I think it was current student reps or something complaining of transfers taking away jobs. The drop in transfers indicates that something did happen.canesfan1986 wrote:It seems hard to believe that Columbia listened to its students and gave up tuition money from transfers. Question:
Is the Dean's Certification suppose to come from your law school only?
Or, is it suppose to come from both your law school and undergraduate school?

Both. You can just use the same form for each.GodFavor2010 wrote:Question:

Re: Columbia 2012 Transfer Applicants
If you forgot to have your UG send one, just call CLS admissions and ask if it's okay if your UG faxes or emails the form. I've had a couple of schools tell me that fax or email is fine.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
