need help, T40-50, top 8-10%, transfer apps for $$

Hello,

I'm on the JAG path and I don't think I actually want to transfer. But I do want to game the system a bit and get more scholarship money.

Unfortunately I haven't had time to start preparing my apps until now.

Here's where I was thinking of throwing in applications:
UVA
Duke
Michigan
Cornell
GULC
UT
UWash

I put in the first 3 because, if accepted to either of those, I would seriously consider attending. But they are longshots from what I can tell. The last 4 are high ranked schools that I wouldn't actually go to, but would give me a good position of leverage to negotiate more money with my school. (I don't think my school would give me as much if I lateral-ed).

One problem is that I am busy this summer and I don't have much time to get in applications. Another problem is that I cannot personally meet with professors for letters of recommendation because I am working out of state. And some of the apps start getting reviewed really soon (UVA is June 15).

Sound like a decent plan? Also, what's the best way to start negotiating for more money at my school? Send the dean an email before submitting apps that says I am considering transferring for financial/career reasons? Wait until I get accepted somewhere?

Thanks!

My understanding is that your current law school offers many additional scholarships for 2L year. Have you applied for any of those scholarships open to rising 2Ls ?

Your best strategy, however, is to get accepted to Virginia, Duke or Michigan & then play your hand since you are willing to transfer to those schools.

The only scholarships that my school lists right now are some writing competitions and some diversity stuff. The prizes are a few hundred bucks. There might be more somewhere, though. I'll check that out. Thanks.
