Got my rankings back from my 1st semester today. I go to a T3 state school and am want to transfer to the best T1 that will take me.
I ranked 16 out of 126 in my class (16/126). That makes me in the top 13%. How well do I have to perform to have a chance at the following:

UW
UC Hastings
George Washington
Georgetown
Other T1 Schools

Asking just for information: Why not stay in Idaho and continue to be the "stud" there? It is a good regional school, and being in the top 10% there could potentially lead to the best jobs in the region.

To transfer into the T14 you need:
-top 10-15% at T1, top 5-10% for CCN
-top 5-10% at a T2, top 5% for CCN
-top 1-2% at a T3/T4
-Other notes: Depending on how far up you want to transfer, you may even succeed if you are ranked top 20-30%. For example, if you are transferring up like 10-15 spots, top 20-30% maybe enough (like a lateral transfer). Also, people in the T3/T4 generally only have a shot at transfer friendly schools in the T14.

To transfer into the T1 you need:
-top 10-20% at a T2
-top 5-10% at T3
-top 5% at T4
-Other notes: Depending on just exactly where you are and how far up you want to transfer, you can again make the jump by being in the top 20-30%.

So I'd say you have an uphill battle.

you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. The worst they can say to you is no.

Id shoot apps to the schools ranked 20-60 if you stay/ go up or down slightly in the class rankings. You'll get a bite. Take into account your scholly $ & class rank/job prospects vs. other school job prospects & debt @ median and weigh accordingly.

Thanks for the advice. Does anyone have advice on West Coast T1 schools such as UW and UC Hastings?

Forum member A'nold went from Idaho to UW in the past couple years. Not sure if he posts anymore, but you could try a PM.

meh I think the ranges are more fluid than arrow suggests in the second half of that section. Adcomms' perceptions of T2/T3 schools don't necessarily align with USNWR ranking (and, regardless, there are constant changes within these tiers). OP: I would apply everywhere you have a real interest in the T1 and see what sticks. The app fees are a minor investment in the long run.

I'd second that. Give it a shot and see what happens. Remember most of what is said on these forums is speculation from individuals who think they have a grasp on the application review process. Those that do speak from experience speak from their own unique perspective and it doesn't necessarily reflect what will happen to you or what even normally happens. Others are just bowing at the altar of USNWR rankings.
