Gifts for Recommenders

Postby jessuf » Tue Jan 24, 2012 11:58 am

Aside from a thank you note, I'd like to get each of my recommenders a gift. Any ideas? In the past, I had gotten recommenders a bottle of wine or something similar because I knew what they enjoyed, but I am worried about buying my current professors anything alcohol-related in the event they do not drink or do not enjoy that type of beverage. What about a gift certificate to a restaurant in the area or something similar?

Writing LORs is part of their job. A thank you note is appropriate, but that's all. The school might not even allow them to accept gifts from students.

I got my recommenders from my professional life gifts, but that was because it wasn't their job to do so. Profs expect to write LORs, I'm jumping on the "don't do this" band wagon.

But if you, a small box of candy or a starbucks gift card or something might be appropriate?

Oh ok fine, I will just do a thank you note. I didn't realize it was uncommon to give a thank you gift.
