Top 10%ish at T14 -- HYS chances

Figured I'd make a chances thread since they seem to be popular.

Lower T14 (DNCG), i'm sure everyone can figure it out which one if they wanted to but I don't think it matters much.

3.809 GPA first semester should put me somewhere in the neighborhood of the 10% mark, but my school doesn't do rankings or percentiles. FWIW- I received 3 As and a B+ in my doctrinal classes (A- in LRW).

We only have two doctrinal classes second semester, along with 2 electives and LRW. The electives are not subject to a curve, so i'm hoping my GPA will go up some (obviously no guarantees).

Have work experience and a good reason for transferring (at least I think so).

Small scholarship, but transferring would probably save me money overall (possibly a significant amount, please take at face value)

What are my chances at HYS? Is it worth the effort? I almost want to apply for it just to know if I could.

your chances are good, and as you identified, the worst that can happen is you're out $300ish and are still at the top of your class at a t14.

i am at SLS right now, and we have only one DCNG transfer this year and they were stanford UG/compelling reason to be in the bay area, and (though i am not positive i remember this exactly) were top 25%ish. that said, it seems that of our class, SLS values ties to the school, region, or some good (i.e. not prestige) reason to transfer along with strong grades. nevertheless, as with all transfer apps to HYS, HLS is probably your best chance as they take the largest class.

Worst that can happen is they say 'no' and if you don't then you might always wonder...

With that said, choose your LoRs carefully...professors that really liked you who you probably won't take a class with again.

Given the description you provided, it sounds like you are at NU. I wonder what you think "transfer at Harvard" nets you that "top 10% at NU" doesn't. Other than a more prestigious piece of paper.

Edit: Just saw that the transfer might save you money. Meh, in that case go for it. Just note that if you transfer to YHS but want to work in Chicago, employers may raise an eyebrow. It happened to a guy that transferred out of here to go to Harvard. Use caution.

I know everyone is going to get on my case about this, but my target market is DC. I have no interest in NYC.

Would a transfer up to HYS give me a better, or worse, shot at high powered DC firms?

The money thing is also kind of a big deal to me, but I wouldn't want to shoot myself in the foot. I'd rather get the firm I want and have more debt, than transfer up and have to settle on a firm or location I don't like.

I can't speak to Harvard but if you keep up your grades you'll do fine in DC. Covington doesn't come to NU oci but they do a resume drop which actually does lead to a lot of phone interviews.

Also this is very important. Last year Northwestern offered people who got transfer acceptances a lot of money to stay. I don't know if they will continue that retarded policy this year, but you absolutely should apply to HYS, and even CCN, just to get an acceptance and try to leverage money. Rumor is they gave a full ride to stay. You'd be stupid to leave after that.

DF they converted a couple big schollies into full-rides + stipends. That's a little different.

You probably won't get Y or S, but if H puts you in a better financial situation, you should go.

The time and effort are probably worth it if they offer anything at all to stay, since at least I would have an option at that point.

People talk about burning bridges as a downside to transferring, but I'm not sure I understand why a professor would be upset if you asked for a transfer recc and then the school made it worth your while to stay after you were accepted.

Any thoughts on why this is the common sentiment?

Thanks, that's what I figured.

I'll probably apply to H, and to Y just for the hell of it.

Can any of you comment on the likelihood of making law review if I do similarly next semester?

Not sure what the general grade cut off is for LR, but it seems like they take roughly 10% of the class. So is LR pretty tough to get from my position? I have no idea how hard the write on competition is, so I'm not sure whether the 50% writing competition score means everything, nothing, or can only swing you a few percentage points up/down from your grades.

People in the top 10% can definitely miss it. At NU, good grades really don't lock it up like they appear to at other schools.
