i'm at a T20 school and am weighing an offer for transfer to Cornell. my grades aren't that awesome at my current school and i put in the transfer application to see what my options were (figured, at the very least, i could negotiate some $$$? i'm currently paying sticker). i didn't get on LR at my current school, but it is really good for my specialty and located in a much cooler place than Ithaca (not literally). a few months ago, i wouldn't have given this another thought and would've stayed at my current school - but now that the opportunity has presented itself, how important is cracking the T14?

What city is your current T20 next to, and do you have ties to that area? If the answer is something other than Chicago or a comparably-sized city, I would do the transfer. You're talking about no difference in price either way, and no LR at your T20... I don't think staying will really increase your chances at Biglaw.Cognoscenti wrote:i'm at a T20 school and am weighing an offer for transfer to Cornell. my grades aren't that awesome at my current school and i put in the transfer application to see what my options were (figured, at the very least, i could negotiation some $$$? i'm currently paying sticker). i didn't get on LR at my current school, but it is really good for my specialty and located in a much cooler place than Ithaca (not literally). a few months ago, i wouldn't have given this another thought and would've stayed at my current school - but now that the opportunity has presented itself, how important is cracking the T14?

It all depends. If you're going to UT and want to work in energy law in TX, stay put. If you're at UGA and want to practice NYC M&A, go to Cornell.

Grades aren't spectacular, no law review, and no scholarship? That seems like a pretty strong case for a transfer. Some guy who was transferring to Cornell mentioned something about having problems participating in their OCI. Make sure that is all set before you decide to transfer.Cognoscenti wrote:i'm at a T20 school and am weighing an offer for transfer to Cornell. my grades aren't that awesome at my current school and i put in the transfer application to see what my options were (figured, at the very least, i could negotiation some $$$? i'm currently paying sticker). i didn't get on LR at my current school, but it is really good for my specialty and located in a much cooler place than Ithaca (not literally). a few months ago, i wouldn't have given this another thought and would've stayed at my current school - but now that the opportunity has presented itself, how important is cracking the T14?

yeah i would peruse the T14 transfer threads on here before making a decision, as I've gleaned from them that Cornell is very transfer un-friendly, beginning with their refusal to allow transfers to participate in their major OCI event. I think that alone may be enough to dissuade you from transferring. my advice would be to stay where you are and network like crazy and you should be able to land a decent job in your market and specialty.Corwin wrote:Grades aren't spectacular, no law review, and no scholarship?
