I'll play for fun, even though I've seen transfer acceptances can be ultra random and obviously 2nd semester could change things dramatically.

Philly area T2; 3.8+ (top 5%)
CN MP(B?) DNC

Interested in Midwest:
Univ. of Chicago
Northwestern (no significant work experience, straight from Ugrad)
Georgetown

Any other thoughts on schools I should consider or other transfer strategy advice would be appreciated, Thanks.

I'd get those EA apps out to Chicago and GULC as soon as they are available. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say a top 5% kid can get into both.

Agreed. Top 5% at 34 ranked school gives you a good shot at all of CCN (~50%) and an insignificant chance at HYS. UChi ED is a good move for you, assuming this is your first choice (which it should be if you want the midwest). From what I've heard NW wants to see work experience in its transfers as well, presumably because it makes them more employable. Only other consideration really is that you may be better off staying put if you're school is already in the midwest.

EDIT: also, don't forget about Michigan.

AND, I am confused about your rank. 5/225 puts you between top 2-3% which means HYS is still very much within reach. If that is actually your rank, I'd advise against UChi ED and that you hold out for H, especially if you would be eligible for need-based aid. You will get in to UChi RD.

SpencerPratt wrote:I'll play. Currently PT at T1 in the 40s, Top 33% (only given 33/50, estimated around top 25%).

GULC PT
GW PT
UMD PT

Thinking about going back home...

Still have no idea about PT, but i'll try it anyway.

UMD PT -- 65% (with ties to area)
GW PT -- 35%
GULC PT -- 20%

V
B
P
NU
D

I'd say you have at least a 50% chance at all of those, but remember that UVA really only takes VA kids and NU still generally likes to see work experience. Your odds will also be slightly better if your school is in the same market as any of those.

I think you're looking at acceptances b/w T6-10 as it is. Top 3% should get you at least one of CN.

My school does not give specific class ranks after first semester, only lists cutoff's for certain groups (5% being the highest)
So 5/225 was just a guess based on the difference between my grades and the gpa required to be within the top 5%.

Thanks for the advice though, much appreciated. Especially enjoyed the mention of HYS, gave me a good laugh. I'm still working up the courage to apply to UChi and not laugh at myself.

Thanks again for your time.

V = out
B = out
P = in
NU = in (if work experience), out (if not)
D = waitlist

Add in CCN too. You might get at least one (add H if you get within the top 5% after this semester; Y/S are almost always a longshot).

50%.

While this isn't really a lateral, top third is usually good enough for a lateral. I think you'll get some slack for coming from another top midwest school (competition), and for being a safe bet -- not many UChi EDers can drop 10% and still be competitive for BigLaw.

Midwest TTT to Lewis & Clark, Willamette, Seattle U, University of Oregon chances?
Top 30% in class. Compelling reason (husband works in Portland).

Why no Haaaaahhvahd?

Figured I had no shot, though that would be amazing. I figure when it comes down to it, I may send applications to H and S, especially if I'm #1 in my class, just figure I'm 10% at best at either. Thoughts?

If you are #1 at the end of the year, you have more than a 10% chance - although it's really hard to estimate. Even if it was 10%, that's worth an app IMO.

If #1:

H: 35%
S: 15%

Strong softs may help.

If you end up #1 (or even #2) in your class, I think HLS wouldn't necessarily be out of the question. Sure, it's a long shot, but I would argue all transfer applications to HLS are a long shot. The strong class rank, 3 CALI awards (this would be better if you could nab a couple more this semester) and class size all should help your chances.

I hope you consider applying, and if you do, that you spend some serious time on it. Crafting a great personal statement, solid recommendations from professors, and an error-free submission are key. You're definitely within range in the above hypothetical. Knowing that I took my shot would, personally, be well worth the marginal time and money that goes into it. Keep up the good work, and congrats on your first semester!

Sure...

3.89 at school ranked 20-25. Top 4%. (7 of 225)

Would probably only leave for HYS...

Vandy - 40%
BAMA - 90%
Washington - 50% -- they take very few and you'll need strong ties to WA

Definitely a good move for you.

Why can I get P (and not the others) and why one of CCN?
