Hello TLS'ers!

I just started at seattle U and I have to say, I am really impressed with the school. Classes are great, people are genuine.

However, Seattle itself is depressing.

Outside of the school, the people are not friendly. People don't smile or nod on the street. They avert eye contact! When youre jogging, they avert eye contact like you're going to rape them or something. It's unnerving and makes me feel like I don't exist. I have yet to have a random convo ANYWHERE in seattle. That's not cool with me. I like my cities random, adventurous and out-going.

Seattle women (what women? as my room mates say) are severely lacking in the social skills, style and looks department. I've lived all over the world. I've lived in alaska, where its considered weird to hit on people in any public location but the bars, to DC and London where random girls buy you drinks. Seattle takes the cake for being really bad about this. There is a great blog that describes this phenom called "Why girls love seattle" :

The city is not international at all. Sure, there is a large Asian contingency, but this contingency is predominantly Asian-Americans. I haven't heard an accent yet. I need some f-ing cultural diversity. It's killing me.


So, I want to transfer laterally. But, where? BTW, SeaU ranks 86.

I'm in my first year, so I have until June 1011 to apply. No grades yet.

This is why it's good to research both your school and its location before attending one. This is especially bad since Seattle U only places regionally at best and would thus likely lead to you staying in the area after you graduate.

To make a lateral transfer you'll need, at a minimum, median-or-better grades and a geographical preference for the new school (to explain to them why you want to live there instead). That doesn't guarantee anything, that's just the bare minimum for it to even be possible.

Beyond that it's hard for anyone to give advice without grades. 1L grades are 95% of the equation when it comes to whether or not you can transfer anywhere, and the better you grades the better the schools you can transfer to. So just work your ass off and try to make sure your grades are good enough to get you out of there.

Or drop out, if it's not too late to withdraw and reapply elsewhere for next year.

In that case it's largely dependent on geography and your connections to it. Any school that is a "peer" school to Seattle U will similarly be confined in its placement, and wherever you go should be with the expectation that you'll get a job there when you graduate.

Figure out where you want to live, and go from there.

top 25% will prob get you into wustl/emory
Top 15% will get you into GW.
vandy/ucla/usc- 10%-5%
Georgetown down 5%.

Have you ever lived in a major city before? This is basically how it is in most larger cites (although, I wouldn't consider Seattle a very large city).

Northeastern? Boston is friendly and attractive.

Lol at this entire post. Although I will admit that there were like 5 armed robberies in 5 days on the UW campus about a month ago.

Interesting view. I'm not sure where you used to live, but I think Seattle people look pretty nice to me, at least better than lots of northeastern big cities. Have you ever tried to go to Bellevue or elsewhere like that? Cuz I think maybe you were going to some bad areas of the grand Seattle area.

BTW, if you really enjoy nice people around you, you probably don't want to go to schools in big cities. Also, the legal industry is not really for nice people, so perhaps you want to get prepared for that.

wow, as someone who spent his whole life in seattle before moving away for law school, I find this whole post absolutely absurd

Are you even venturing outside Capital Hill at all? Walk down Cherry/James away from downtown a bit, go down towards garfield and tell me that the city isn't cultured at all

Go down to Rainier avenue, go spend a day at Ezell's fried chicken, go out to Beacon Hill, Othello, Alki. Go spend a day hanging out in Ballard or the U-District.

I dunno what your idea of a good looking girl is, if you're more into high class girls go to the east side (bellevue, kirkland, redmond). IF you like your girls a little more girl-next-door/countryish go north towards edmonds/woodinville. If you want a good mix of everything, go hang out in the u-district/u-village by the university of washington

Go hit up Belltown on friday/saturday nights, or go check out pioneer square

Yes, i will give you the seattle freeze part, people in seattle do seem to have a guard about them in general, but if you go to a bar or a club or any "social" place that pretty much goes out the window.

I guess you haven't been to many places if you think seattle is depressing my friend.
You want to know really depressing places? check out the midwaste. Detroit(Woetown), Cleveland, Indianapolis, St. Louis ( murderville), Cincinasty...
Ive lived in those cities my whole life. You don't know how nice Seattle is compared to those places...

As someone who's lived in Seattle for four years, this post is full of win. I wouldn't move back there because of the economy, but I don't visit nearly as often as I should. OP needs to get out a lot more if he finds the city boring.

Piecora's. Dahlia Bakery. Cinerama. KEXP. Easy Street Records on Lower Queen Anne. Breakfast at the Coastal Kitchen. Mariners games at Safeco. Discovery Park. Bars and restaurants in Wallingford. A billion live music venues. Driving to Leavenworth and up into the Cascades. Don't get me started. How can you be bored in Seattle?

In restrospect, meeting people isn't even that hard. Go to live shows. Once you're a regular, people will actually gravitate towards you. Yeah, Seattle's chilly at first towards non-natives, but some of my best friends are from there. And I'm a Southerner.

Again, OP, you need to get out more. I had friends there who were Swiss and German. I used to date a German girl. And have you ever been to Ballard?

No, Seattle's not to be confused with New York or Washington in the diversity department overall, but it certainly is there if you look for it.

Seattle is FULL of diversity. Every Asian country you can list, Mexicans, Russians, African-Americans, etc. Isn't Seattle one of the most diverse cities in the country? I've never been to a city with more diversity. This isn't even close.
