So you've transferred: Resume?

Post by chitown825 » Thu Jul 29, 2010 9:17 am

Anybody who is transferring given thought to how they will designate such on their resume? You obviously need to disclose it. I was thinking something like:

Jim Shoe

Georgetown University Law Center
Juris Doctor, 2012 (expected)
Transfer student from University of Florida Levin School of Law
GPA: 3.58 Class rank: 17 / 103 (top 18%)
Etc., Etc.

Florida State University
Bachelor of Science, 2009

Under your education section, I'd go with something more along the lines of this:

GULC
J.D. candidate 2012

Uiversity of Florida Levin School of Law, 2009-2010
GPA: 3.58 - 17/103

FSU
B.S. blablabla 2009

Of course you can add all the bolds, italics and that other stylized nonsense.

Also, abbreviate Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Science to J.D. and B.S. Everyone reading it knows what they stand for and you don't risk sounding like a self-important doucher.

I wasn't asking for resume advice--I put about 5 seconds of thought into Jim Shoe's fictitious resume. I only sought your opinion on the designation of one's transfer status.

I wasn't saying that you were a self-important doucher. Just passing along some wisdom that the gods laid upon me.

Here's what I'm doing until I have a semester at the new school:

Jim Shoe

Georgetown University Law Center
Juris Doctor, 2012 (expected)

University of Florida Levin School of Law
Fall 2009 - Spring 2010
GPA: 3.58 Class rank: 17 / 103 (top 18%)
Etc., Etc.

Florida State University
Bachelor of Science, 2009

That's a bit misleading I think. It doesn't make it obvious that the GPA is from the school you transferred from (although you'd think an employer would be able to figure this out on his own)

I would reccomend something like this:

Georgetown University Law Center
Juris Doctor, 2012 (expected)
Transfer student from University of Florida Levin School of Law

University of Florida Levin School of Law
GPA: 3.58 Class rank: 17 / 103 (top 18%), First year courses completed
Etc., Etc.

Florida State University
Bachelor of Science, 2009

That being said, I haven't completely figured out how to do it, but your original post would a bit misleading I think

Credited. Your new Career Services Office should tell you/give you an example, but it will almost certainly look like this. No need to have the word "transfer" anywhere on there- they get it.

On second thought, I am now declaring that you are a self-important doucher.

I agree with this. However, re: spelling things out vs. abbreviating, the career people at the school I'm transferring from made me spell out almost everything from JD to BS to the states I was referring to, etc. I thought it was stupid, but did it anyway. I will seek counsel on this at my new school.
