Question about taking semester off and transfer

Is it possible for a student to take a semester off and then go back to the school or transfer? I am beginning law school next Fall but I might have an opportunity come up during the school year that I would not want to pass up (I would def finish up the semester). If I am already in law school, is it possible to take a year off for an opportunity and come back next cycle part time or transfer to another school?
