Random off topic question for you UCLATransfer

Im a life long Californian resident, went to grade school through u-grad in CA, but I spent my first year of law school in Indiana, would I still get Instate if I transferred back to a UC?

Probably -- civ pro, man. You don't lose state citizenship unless you change your residence and have the intent to remain [in the new state] indefinitely. Did you have this intent when you moved? Intent is typically evidenced by applying for instate tuition at Indiana, changing your Driver's License, registering to vote there, looking for work in that new state, etc.

UW-Seattle's website pretty much says that if you go out-of-state for school you are out-of-state for tuition purposes. I don't know.

It depends on the state/school I believe. For CA, I think you can still get in state tuition even if you were technically out of the state as long as you still have a legal address in CA, have a CA drivers license, didn't work out of state, didn't register your car out of state, etc. Don't take this as gospel though (at least the specifics), since it didn't apply in my case this is just my best recollection.

For me, I had to register my car out of state during 1L since the registration expired while I was out there. This required that I get a drivers license out there, so I "lost" my CA residency for my first year back. With UCs though you can get it back for the next year as long as you "reestablish" residency at least 12 months before the next school years starts.

ROFL. The standards for 28 U.S.C. 1332, shockingly, are not the same standards law schools use to determine who pays instate tuition

It's funny. I actually thought of this the very first time I learned about the whole residency for purposes of the statute thing. Too bad it doesn't work that way.
