You get the keys to your apartment right after you sign the lease (I think you call up the superintendent of the building to meet with him or her and s/he gives you the keys). So, that's when you have access to the building to move in your furniture.

Quick Q: photo requirements are not online anymore since the first deadline has passed. Is there anything special about the photo or is it a normal passport-style pic? TIA

August 13th. I tried switching my move-in date to August 11th to give myself a bit more time before orientation started, but apparently they're working on my room 'til the 13th. Ah well, lookin' forward to meetin you!

The requirements are given to you when you click upload photo on admitnet.

Oh and FYI--make sure the photo is high resolution. I uploaded a 1600X1200 photo (my camera was on memory-save mode) and they rejected it. I uploaded a second photo at 3264X2448 which was accepted

For people in Columbia housing: whats the deal with this rug that has to cover 80% of floor space "in order to comply with the terms of the lease"? Anyone have suggestions as to where I can find a large rug for less than $250? (that was the cheapest one at ikea).

You don't actually have to do this. It's a standard provision in every apartment lease in NYC for some reason (I think for noise insulation) but I have never heard of any landlord trying to enforce it.

Ikea or craigslist is probably your best bet, but you really do not have to get one.

It's actually a good idea to get some rugs, though, as I've had LOTS of problems with neighbors in Columbia grad student housing regarding noise from foot traffic. (Creaky old wood floors + psychotic rent-control tenants/suburban CU student neighbors who don't realize living in the city involves a certain degree of noise = frequent calls or visits from your superintendent and UAH)

Target.com has some pretty cheap ones that are nice. Try to get most of the visible floor space in each room covered, not including what's hidden beneath furniture.

You can buy large area rugs at Home Depot for very little $$$. They are not particularly attractive however.

Anyone else already here? I got her a week ago and I can't wait to meet my new classmates.

I can only get into the school common areas since I do not have my ID yet too- bummer.

I am happy to say that the area around CLS is great. There are tons of shops and cafes. However, two streets down from Lenfest seems to unsavory. The cutoff is very noticeable too.

Anyway, I am so ready for classes to start!

Does anyone know if it's still possible to upload a photo? My original pic was rejected, and now I can't figure out how to replace it with a better quality one. I'm guessing they've just removed that option from admitnet now... :x

I wonder why you guys are having problems, resolution should be less of an issue than just having a simple monotone background with no distracting elements.

I took a Christmas photo, shopped out the background, and actually had to blow it up a little to meet their minimum size requirements. The quality wasn't great by any stretch but it was still a distinct shot of my head.

since its past the deadline I believe you will have to go to some student center and get your ID picture taken at orientation. However, I don't know if this also means you can never have a picture on admitnet.

Where did you get this information from about rugs? Did UAH send out an email or something?

its in the original 'offer of assignment' email, and on the UAH wesbite. Its easy to overlook and they never highlight it specifically.

I've seen 6' long rugs at Ikea for like $20 before. I don't plan on getting any rugs though unless I get any complaints.

As far as the rug question is concerned, I really like FLOR (http://www.flor.com). I got a rug slightly smaller than 8x10 for about 240.

Hmm, I didn't receive this e-mail as of yet. Could you elaborate a bit on what's inside the e-mail? Now I'm curious (and really want my loan money) :)

It's nothing really:

"You may now view, save and print the disclosure statement for your Direct Loan(s) at:

https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action

Your disclosure statement provides information about your rights and responsibilities related to your student loans. It is important to keep all correspondence in a safe location for future reference. Your disclosure statement will be available for you to retrieve for a limited time. Therefore, please take the time now to retrieve your copy.

You will need to login with a valid PIN to retrieve your documents."
