Could you take pictures inside the gym? I'm specifically curious about the free weight area with benches/squat racks.

This.

Also hope that they allow deadlifting.

If they let me inside, I will get pictures! I'm not that much of a "gym" person but I will try to get pictures of this weight area you speak of :)

Is it possible to rent a double bed? Is this common? This is really important as I sleep a lot.. ;)

Great, thanks!

Is not allowing deadlifting common? I've only been lifting for a few months and my roommate has a weight set, so I haven't lifted in an actual gym before.

Alot of gyms don't allow the slamming of weights even if it's for a legitimate reason. Dropping weights hard is unavoidable when you are deadlifting heavy.

MSPeast wrote:I have a question:

Do they have dishwashers? There was one in the room I stayed in at ASW, but later on I read something about them not having dishwashers. This made me wonder whether the guy I stayed with provided his own.

The windows DID open in the room I stayed in.

Full disclosure: I stayed in a one-person studio (not the one huge one, but one of the others). Not sure if the things I saw apply to other rooms.

Here is most of a post I made right after the ASW. Not sure how much this renovation is going to change any of my observations.
MSPeast wrote:I didn't realize all the post-ASW chat was going on over here - I keep peeking at the not-moving ASW thread and was surprised that nobody was saying anything.

Anyway, I stayed in Gewirz with a friend from undergrad who is a 1L with a single room. Here are some various comments I have about Gewirz, from my brief stay:
- I've visted a few people in grad school who all live in big apartment buildings. So far, Gewirz has by far had the fastest elevators.
- You can tell it's a bit dated from the '90s, but hopefully the renovation this summer will address that. Nothing major, really, it's more cosmetic stuff, like green carpeting and white doors.
- The windows open! This was not the case in my undergrad dorm.
- There are trash chutes and recycling drop-offs on each floor.
- There are laundry rooms on only two floors of the building, but I didn't see them personally, so I don't know if they're really big or if they run into peak-demand capacity issues.
- In case anyone cares, the main entrance faces the north, to McDonough.
- They post a list of the daily events in the elevators, including any make-up classes, which apparently can happen on Saturdays at 10 in the morning. Yikes.
- Nothing was in disrepair - nothing that anyone cares about, anyway.
- The shower was fine; I guess the shower head could have used a cleaning, but I was on an upper floor and the pressure and temperature were fine. You get hot water basically right away, too. The bathroom was actually pretty roomy, but this could vary by room.
- The room had a dishwasher, in case anyone was wondering.
- The cable comes with premium channels (at least the HBO block, anyway). Since utilities are included, I'm presuming that everyone has the same cable package.
- The top floor (12) has a wrap-around balcony, and has party rooms and the like.
- Floors are generally a mix of room types, but not every floor has every type of room. The floor I was on had single-unit efficiencies, two-room efficiencies, and standard two-room places (with living areas), for example.
- You have to swipe your GoCard (I think that's the name...) to get in to most places. IMO, this should really be a smart card by now. I saw some people have to swipe their cards several times to get it to work.
- Room keys are those strange "punch-card" plastic ones, which is really old technology.
- My friend gets his groceries by having Safeway deliver them. There is also a shopping shuttle a few times a week (or is it weekly?) that you can use.
- There is a daycare in the basement, apparently.

Thanks for reposting this information!

I thought I read somewhere that they didn't have dishwashers. Maybe they'll add them in the renovation or have added them since what I read since yours had one ::hopes::

Word.

I checked out the gym during ASW. Pretty good. I think there were two squat racks (maybe one squat rack and one power cage), good selection of dumbbells, flat and incline benches (maybe decline too, I don't remember), a smith rack (pretty sure) and of course the standard machines and cardio equipment. Well equipped, especially considering the fact that it only serves the law school.

The fact that it's connected to Gewirz is awesome too.

The one I visited (2 br effic) did not have a dishwasher. Also, I asked what renovations they were doing and it sounded like they were only structural (like, dealing with some pest problems, etc.)...that said, I have my fingers crossed that they have a change of heart and get ALL new appliances! ;)

Ooh, good call. I'll save real plates for classy law school dinner parties.

Classy law school dinner parties in your dorm room? Not gonna happen.

Mine has a living room!

But you're right, they'll be on paper plates too.

Paper plates and plastic cups.

Are you talking about the floor diagrams or have you seen your type of room in person?

Pictures I found on the web.. I won't be up there until middle of July.

I am also a weightlifter and I saw the gym facilities. The weight area is on the second floor, and there was a cage and a good selection of dumbbells. I don't lift extremely heavy weights by your guys standards, but I do care about the quality of the weight room. I was satisfied by the one on campus.

Then again, I don't deadlift 200 pounds, so YMMV.

At the airport!! I am so excited. I return on Tuesday, hopefully with many pictures and answers.

I really like the fact that we have a choice of three airports! flying into BWI and out of Reagan.

Side note: for the young'uns of the thread, (Kim i'mtalking to you!) airtran has a great program - Standby U. Basically, cheap flat rate fares on standby until age 23. I'll age out in November but was able to get good rate for this flight.

You do have the choice, but, having lived there for 3 years I highly recommend NOT choosing Dulles. BWI and DCA are both great because they have easy public transportation to the school (if you want to save the expense of cabs, parking and don't have someone to come get you...)

Dulles is a crazy place.

Yeah, you have to take a bus to Dulles from the Rosslyn Metro station. Reagan has the Metro (and is really the best choice if fares are reasonable and you can get a non-stop out of there), and BWI has the MARC as well as a bus from the Greenbelt Metro.

Plus Dulles as those crazy tanks you have to take to get to your gate. Super strange.

I prefer DCA (or National, as I like to call it), but sometimes BWI's fares are low enough that it is worth it to go there and just take MARC.
