My friend lives in DC and has Verizon--she gets service on the metro, even underground.
She said, however, that AT&T recently got metro service too.
I have T-Mobile. When I was in DC, I got service down on the metro platforms, but not while the metro was moving.
I think I can clear up the question about cell service underground a smidge from my time up in DC last fall. Verizon has cell service in all the tunnels and stations, and Sprint has roaming service on the Verizon network. As of October of last year AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon (of course) all had service in the busiest 20 underground (since the above ground already get service) stations (which are the ones we would use most often), but not the tunnels in between (except, occasionally, between the Metro Center and Chinatown stations on the Redline due to the extreme proximity of the two stations - you can look out onto the rail at either of those stations and see its neighbor). By the end of this year, I believe, the remaining underground stations will have the same coverage for all four major carriers. By 2012, the goal is for the Metro to have full service, even in tunnels, for all four carriers.
I still have AT&T, despite their best efforts to screw me, due to my love for my Blackberry Bold. I will probably have them until, at least, November 2012 - which is funny since switching then would have no bearing on service in the metro.
Anywho, has everyone but me done the second round of financial aid stuff? I should get on that.
