Harvard Class of 2013

Post by intlsuperstarr » Sun Nov 01, 2009 6:59 pm

Alright, it's November, and I'm ready to start the ball rolling.... It's about time for this year's acceptances in a month or so, right?

Did anyone else defer last year??

I ended up getting a pretty sweet job right before being accepted (which wasn't until June or something), but I'm pretty excited about moving to Cambridge.

I can't wait to meet y'all! :D :D

Haha, well I intentionally posted it before there would have been an acceptance as to not cause temporary anxiety problems for some. Whoops.

But I should've realized that is impossible...

Phew! I'm glad I'm not the only one! And to answer any of your questions, idk. :) But I guess I'll live off campus because I'm bringing my SO...

Yayyy! Hey, for you deferred folks- was it tough to get a deferral? I've applied for a very cool program that would last from July-October...just long enough that I wouldn't be back in time to start school. It's a once in a lifetime thing, and if I get in I'll REALLY want to go do it...and I'm more than certain I could find something productive to busy myself with for the rest of the year. I know those deets are vague, but does that sound like something that I could defer for?

Congrats to everyone!!!

It wasn't very hard to get a deferral. You don't have to worry about planning your entire year in detail 11 months in advance either! But I wouldn't ask for a year off until you are sure you want to take it...I think they will be less happy about granting for a tentative plan.

Hmm, TS seemed to be handing out deferrals back when I applied. There was even a deferral section and application in the huge binder they sent, and it sounded like as long as you had something solid they were more than glad to let you defer. I really doubt the policy's changed that much since then...

Hey guys! Question: During all the excitement of my JR2, I forgot what he said about the acceptance packet. Did he say they were mailing them out that week? I just want to know whether or not I should be checking my mail.

Oh, and congrats to everyone!

To everybody else that deferred from a previous year...

Our old HLS e-mails are disabled and our new HLS e-mail accounts are up as well! Same format as before jharvard.jd13, pass is L########. That same combo gets us in the admitted students page. Looks like that page is more or less dead until early December though.

Yes to the new people! Congrats to you guys!

In response to the question about deferral, it was pretty easy for me. I basically said I wanted to keep my job for a little longer, and was told it was no problem and that it getting approved by the admissions committee or whomever was more or less a technicality.

Is the username used for the e-mail the same username used to access the admitted students page?

Nope, not at all. The username has random numbers at the end (I believe). The username for email ends in .jd13. I think they start you with the same password for both however.

Very interested in what people are thinking for housing...I hear something like 40-50% of 1L's live in dorms and I would consider that purely out of convenience, but I will have been out of UG for 3 years and am not sure how I feel about trekking to the bathroom in a towel with my shower caddy all over again.

Also not clear on whether I want a roommate. I haven't had one for about a year now but I'm thinking it might be nice to have someone around to let loose with after all the library hours. Of course, the potentially more likely alternative is that the neurosis level between 2 HLS students combined could drive anyone insane. Might be nice to find someone from HBS or another school to live with. Is anyone using that roommate finder thing?

What are you all thinking?

Room mate finder...?

I think dorms would be too distracting, and while the distance is convenient, everything else is not in comparison to an actual apartment. I'm not sure how useful the social aspect of being in a dorm will be either given that, unlike UG, most will be studying a LOT more.

Assuming you meant 3/6-3/8, I will be! I've never been to Boston and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
