vexion wrote:So I mentioned this a couple months ago, but if anyone's up for it, and not bogged down with AOP, I'm thinking we should make a trip to NYC before orientation starts, and it's non-stop studying for the next three years. I haven't been since I was 10, but I'd love to go, see all the sights, have a little fun, party it up. I know this excludes the Hughes people, and that's a shame, but the couple of you who are already in NYC that weekend should definitely come hang out.

The Plan

We drive down from Ithaca on Thursday the 19th, stay three nights, and drive back Sunday the 22nd. I volunteer my truck, I can take four people. A lot of Cornellians take one of the two bus services (Campus-to-Campus Executive Coach Service or Shortline Bus) which run daily between Ithaca and NYC. Unfortunately, round-trip tickets run around $80, and you're forced to adhere to bus schedules. I figure my truck gets 15-16 MPG on the interstate (yeah, the environment can take one for the team), it's a 225-mile drive, so round-trip we'll burn about 30 gallons of gas. At an average New York gas price of $2.86/gal, and five people in the truck, that's only $17.16 per person for the round trip.

The trick is lodging. I've always booked hotels online, and find it's cheapest if you book the day before (snagging the unsold rooms and all that.) Hotel prices vary wildly across the city, but it's not cheap... looks like about $175/night. I'll sleep in the bathtub with a pillow and a comforter, I'm not picky. If we split a room between four people, lodging for three nights would be (conservatively, with tax and fees) about $120/person.

Finally, parking. I haven't looked really closely, but there are a number of lots (Central Parking System lots and the like) around the city that offer 24-hour parking. Most seem to be about $25-30 a day. Three days, between five people, that's $15-18.

SO:

Gas -- $17.16/person, or cheaper if we take a more fuel-efficient vehicle
Lodging -- Maybe $120/person
Parking -- $18
Total == $155.16/person, plus incidentals (lots of alcohol?)

tl;dr come to New York City from the 19th to the 22nd. It'll be a (relatively) cheap trip, a great way to make nice with your new law school friends, and a hell of a lot of fun. Please RSVP or whatever.

I'd be up for the trip as well.

-Thanks!

Does anyone in Section B know if we can use the 2007 edition of the textbook for Con Law in Meyler's class - a used copy is almost $150 cheaper than the 2010 edition.

I'm actually surprised that so many are buying used copies. Personally, I can't stand other people's notes and highlight marks in the textbooks I use. And with spending $55k in tuition, an extra couple hundred for books doesn't seem like that much.

I'm just trying to stay within my budgeted amount for the semester, a couple hundred dollars here or there can make a big difference.

I can understand that. Just for me, I have such an aversion to highlight marks from other people, that I just can't buy used books unless they have no marks, which I imagine is next to impossible for law books.

Hey guys! For those of you a few pages back who were interested in playing tennis and the various other racquet sports, I'm starting a Facebook group so we can share info and set up matches. If you're interested, pm me your info, and you should get an invite today or tomorrow. I'm going to keep it private so we can share phone #s etc...

You know about the secret TLS Cornell 2013 group we already have, right?

WHY aren't they giving our assignments out earlier than the day of orientation!?!?! It seems like each class will have from 10 - 30 pages of reading!!! Way to pack on the stress before the year even starts!

I think it's a little earlier... we get Scoops before Orientation starts. iirc.

Yeah, forget I said anything. The Fall '09 orientation started the 24th, and that first Scoops newsletter is dated the 24th. :P

Either way, trust the 2Ls!

PS: This is how I envision law school.

I agree with you CyLaw regarding used books. It's maddeningly distracting, and I'm also a bookophile so holding some ripped up, poorly highlighted book almost seems like desecration.

It was dated the 24th, but it was put up on the 21st (according to server time stamps).

I think Marshall's change from an idealist to a pawn for Goliath National because of law school debt foreshadows my future. :(

Also, just as an FYI, there's a times blog article on textbooks here: http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/08/ ... f=business

A friend of mine at GW Law is using http://www.chegg.com to rent textbooks. I could never because I'm probably going to write/highlight all over mine. But, if you aren't a big note-writer or highlighter you could save tons.

FYI, Chegg's semester-long rentals end on 12/09, and our finals don't end till the 17th. Open-books could be a bitch without a book.

Also, try http://www.bigwords.com. They aggregate all the major bookseller and rental sites and show the lowest price. And if you haven't already, sign up for that free Amazon Student membership (1 free year of Amazon Prime.)

From what I saw the "due date" is 12/19/10 for semester rentals. Are you sure about the 12/09?

No, I'm not. I thought that's what it said when I looked a few days ago. I could've been wrong. Maybe it's different for different books?
