Can someone explain to me the difference between hornbooks and other study aids (such as Emanuel's Outline)?

Also, if you buy the E&Es, do you also typically buy the hornbook?

An E&E can be considered a really shitty hornbook. It just skims the surface of the material, although it makes the gist of the course readily digestible. A real hornbook should be about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a casebook. Hornbooks are distillations of legal principles that flow in a more linear fashion than most casebooks. Hornbooks distinguish among nuances of law, but they probably don't capture all that your professor does if you're at a T14. You can think of a hornbook as a more practical guide to a field of law; the course is an in-depth journey into that field.

Emanuel's outlines are the most basic distillations of rules in a practice area. The outlines are not written like a text, but rather, like a bunch of rules. You'll learn what these are, but they are generally derived from holdings in cases.

Say, the NY court of appeals (NY's highest court) holds that a plaintiff's negligence does not bar a torts claim, but the amount the plaintiff can recover is proportionate to the amount the defendant is liable. That is comparative negligence. There will be different ways to assess this. Some jurisdictions will split liability proportionately. Some will bar a suit if the plaintiff is 50% or more negligent, etc. Basically, the outlines just capture these rules in brief sentences. They are pretty much worthless, unless you decide to slack off and go out many times a week.

For some reason all I can think about is how awesome it would be to have a boat on the lake. And beer.

This sounds like a great idea, we should rent a pontoon or something for one of the first weekends

Maybe tomorrow or Friday?

Make sure Mitchell doesn't take a dump in my room.

Just shooting in the dark here, but I'll be a Cornellian 1L this fall and was wondering if anyone's going to be up for some just-for-fun, yet moderately rigorous tennis while the weather permits. If so, let me know. Tennis is something I NEED to do.

I'm pretty lousy, but my husband is an avid tennis player who is looking for someone to play with. Have you found good courts? We have a few near our place, but couldn't asses the quality. I'll pm you.

I am not in any way competitive but enjoy the sport. Just PM me or let me know when you want to play.

Yes. Almost no one plays, so it's easy to get a spot, too. This probably doesn't matter to someone who's never played before, but keep in mind that it is a "hardball" or American squash court, and not the international style.

I love squash so if anyone is up for it on a regular basis let me know!!

Also, this might be a long shot, but is anyone willing to let me store a small carload of items at their place for a week and possibly help me move into hughes? I'll be leaving my car at the airport for a week and i'm a bit worried about leaving everything in my car.
I'm willing to pay a fee. Please PM me if you can help or if you have any suggestions. Thanks!
