I did the promissory note, the counseling, and the PLUS application. is this one of those things that just takes awhile to show up?

Where are you finding your bill?

You'll still need to do the federal verification worksheet. For Cornell you are dependent when determining need based aid (institutional aid), but for Federal loans you are independent as you are a grad student. Two separate statuses and the worksheet applies to the federal one.

Other than that, if you submitted the PLUS paperwork to the law schools finaid office with the correct amount listed and did so a while ago, I would give finaid a call or send them an email.

http://jtf.cornell.edu/ which is not actually the bill but the finaid account portal for Cornell proper

But I would avoid checking that really. The bill is not actually ready, and it will just freak you out that it says you don't have steps done, when really they just haven't updated the checklist yet.

If we only plan on taking Staffords and no Plus loans, do we need to do anything beyond the EPS, Promissary, and entrance counseling?

Does everyone who is taking out Stafford and PLUS have to fill out an EPS? I didn't and finaid office said that I needn't turn in any other paperwork...

I didn't do an EPS either.

But I did do entrance counseling, the promissory note, fed verification worksheet (with the attached tax return), and the graduate plus loan application.

Btw, did anyone notice the subtle math problem on the graduate plus form? It says you can add an additional 2.5% percent to cover the origination charge, but to truly cover the original amount you need to subtract 2% from the pre-fee amount and not add 2% to the award amount. They messed it up on my financial aid page (I get $20 less than awarded - lol), but I wrote it correctly on my sheet.

I just realized you could figure out my entire financial aid package just from the information I posted above. Don't care enough to change it though.

I'd love to go to Cornell, but I was not invited to apply for the Dean's Scholarship and my family's income is high enough so that I seriously doubt that I'll receive any financial aid. My parents, however, cannot and will not contribute anything to my law school education. It seems unfair that their income, even if it has no bearing on my ability to pay, determines whether or not I qualify for aid :|

Are you claimed as a dependent on their tax returns? If you are... and they aren't helping you out... tell them to quit. IIRC as long as you are not claimed as a dependent you can fill out FAFSA with only your income. Don't most schools just go off the FAFSA report?

My brother was a similiar situation... when he filed FAFSA as a non-dependent he received a bunch of money.

EDIT: I just realized I quoted a post from the first page on a 48 page thread. Pro

The school asks for you to send in your parent's tax returns even if your not a dependent.

Does anyone know if we need to "Request PLUS Loan" on http://www.studentloans.gov as well as completing the Paper Grad Plus Loan App (the one that is sent directly to Cornell)? Also you just do the entrance counseling once for Stafford and Plus, right?

I tried to apply online for the loans and it said the school wasn't accepting that year (10-11).

So I guess the paper form is sufficient. And necessary.
