I'm pretty skeptical of the utility of prep classes and such. Y'all should be working on your bowling skills I think.

Also, I think upping the post count of this thread is fairly important for future success. UVA is up to 120+ pages already.

Is there a way to 'bowl on' to law review?

Perhaps you could spearhead a drive to launch a new journal dedicated to the intersection of law and bowling.

Is there really that big of a emphasis on bowling at Duke? It guess it helps to explain why Nixon put a bowling lane in the White House.

Were only 9 pages ahead of the Cornell thread though.

Also, I suck at bowling (even Obama puts me to shame). I will have to practice this summer so I don't get laughed at lol.

If we change bowling to some sort of jazz dance class/performance, I am very much on board for this revised system. Or maybe a napping contest.

Napping contest? I didn't think one could find a lazier sport than bowling, but you sure did.

There seems to be quite a number of newly minted 2Ls here recently, so I am going to ask how all the 1L exams were structured (including 1st semester exams as well). Were they all sit down, 3 hour essays; or what were the common and uncommon structures of your exams?

Jazz Dance? I didn't think you could find something that I am worse at than bowling, but you did.

Has anyone received their financial aid award leter yet? I think that's the notice that would show how much of each type of loan you qualify for, and any scholarship(s) you are receiving. I could have sworn that I got an email a few days back saying that on Tuesday of this week the award letters would be sent out via email, but I haven't received anything yet.

Oddly enough, I also haven't received a single email in my Duke email account since the "mumps exposure in NC" email back on the 4th..

Hey guys have a question for members of the class of 2013 -

Months ago when I received my scholarship info, the letter also said "in early May, we will use data obtained from your FAFSA to determine your loan eligibility. Using this eligibility, we will then provide you with an official financial award notice."

It's only May 13th, but I haven't received anything that appears to be entitled "official financial award notice."

Has anyone received this? I did file my FAFSA.

Just wondering when we need to start applying for PLUS loans....for fall starters.

Hi everybody, look forward to meeting you all in the fall!

The exam formats vary a lot. I'm a summer starter and over the course of the three semesters I had two 8-hour exams, three 4-hour exams and one 3-hour exam. All but one were exclusively essays (the other was 2/3 multiple choice/short answer and 1/3 essay). Some of the exams had page counts; one 8-hour exam had a 13 page limit and the other was only 2,000 words. Ditto for variation within the 4-hour exams; one was a free for all issue spotter, the other had five questions with 300 word caps on each.

I've heard even greater variation outside of my section - some sections had 24-hour, 48-hour, and one class even had a 4-day take home!!

One thing you will eventually want to consider is that many of the exams start at 8:30 meaning you have to be seated at 8, so you'll want to train your body to be in test-mode by 8:30 - though most people stay up late during exam week anyway and rely on test-day adrenaline to do the trick.

Note this information but disregard it for a LONG time - don't stress about exams all semester, just focus on getting engaged with the material - it's more interesting that way and I think ultimatley prepares you best.

x3

I'm emailing the office of financial aid to see if the award letters have been sent out yet.

Thanks so much for all the info. Is there a standard application that is used to administer exams? In other words, can you simply load up one program on your computer and use that same program to take all of your exams each semester?

Agreed, very helpful information ATL. I need to worry on my test tomorrow more than anything, but doing the math and realizing I only need a 54 to pass and end up at Duke has eased my worries. Its a 16 page handwritten essay in 3 hours plus 20 multiple choice questions :? I think I need to remind this professor that this isn't law/graduate school.

Also, I haven't even checked my Duke email since getting it. I better start getting it forwarded to my regular email before I miss something important (OMG mumps?!).

Regarding the finaid, here is what I have received:

Good Evening,

We're contacting you today to update you on the financial aid process here at Duke Law.

You've already completed the first step in applying for educational loans by submitting your 2010-2011 FAFSA. We use information from your FAFSA to determine what aid you are eligible for and to create your Official Financial Aid Package. You will receive a follow-up email with instructions for accessing your aid package by the end of the day on Monday, May 17th.

Once you receive your aid package, you'll complete an online process to accept, decline, or modify the amount of each award. We will include detailed instructions for the process with your next email.

Thank you again for completing your FAFSA, and we will be in touch with your individual aid package soon.

Yours,

John D. Ahlers
Director of Financial Aid
Duke University School of Law

The response I received was that they will be sending out Fall term loan awards next week. At this point, they have only sent out award letters to summer starters/summer term enrollees.

So, I'm guessing the point of the 8 hours was to make the time constraint a non-factor? Because 13 pages isn't much in 8 hours.
