I had a full ride undergrad and worked really hard. I felt like if I screwed up I was disrespecting people who didn't have scholarships. It was almost a situation where I felt like I had to prove my worth by doing well, or something like that.

It's an interesting question. I think it puts a different kind of pressure on you to live up to the initial assessment of the school. The Mordecai adds another layer of pressure since it's a named scholarship and therefore a little more high profile. If you flub up during 1L, people might look at you and think "really?" (I'm sure Duke students would never say that out loud, but someone couldn't help but think it).

You've managed to combine the helpful "Duke community" vibe and the d-bag reputation in one comment - well done, sir.

I don't know if I or anyone else has mentioned this before, but people should probably be looking at Duke's 3 SCOTUS clerkships as a sign of things to come. The Dean came in and declared that there was no reason why Duke shouldn't be turning out high-level clerks, so they've really made it a priority. Next term, Duke will have as many SCOTUS clerks as UVA, so that's a good sign moving forward.

I have to balance Duke's 3 clerks with Texas' potential Supreme Court Justice. If only Obama would nominate today.

It's nice that I'm probably not going to have a decision to make about all of this. It's likely either Duke or Chicago and Chicago is going to make that decision for me.

I would think having Wood on the Court would benefit Chicago more than Texas, since she's been there so long. In any case, Kagan and Garland still seem to be the two most likely candidates.

The guy's been a federal public servant since the day he walked out of Stanford LS--he's going to have knowledge about and connections to these kinds of positions. I just get the feeling that there's a ton of new energy and enthusiasm at Duke right now and I want to get in on it.

Agreed. Though if you take the Mordecai LRAP won't be as substantial of an issue. I think there was some buzz at ASO that John Ahlers and Co. are revamping the LRAP to dovetail well with IBR and give some more relief to PI grads.

Went to a meeting on that topic actually. Sort of an LRAP/IBR 101 lunch time session. I think you're right about them attempting to make these two programs work well together. And besides that, John Ahlers is a pretty cool dude.
