If you can get it for free you probably don't need to work as hard to do as well. Big fish little pond kind of thing.

I have also successfully facebook stalked you, Steven's new friend.

I had a full ride undergrad and worked really hard. I felt like if I screwed up I was disrespecting people who didn't have scholarships. It was almost a situation where I felt like I had to prove my worth by doing well, or something like that.

It's an interesting question. I think it puts a different kind of pressure on you to live up to the initial assessment of the school. The Mordecai adds another layer of pressure since it's a named scholarship and therefore a little more high profile. If you flub up during 1L, people might look at you and think "really?" (I'm sure Duke students would never say that out loud, but someone couldn't help but think it).

Don't worry, I'll call you out on sucking if the peer pressure is what you need to do well.

You've managed to combine the helpful "Duke community" vibe and the d-bag reputation in one comment - well done, sir.

I don't know if I or anyone else has mentioned this before, but people should probably be looking at Duke's 3 SCOTUS clerkships as a sign of things to come. The Dean came in and declared that there was no reason why Duke shouldn't be turning out high-level clerks, so they've really made it a priority. Next term, Duke will have as many SCOTUS clerks as UVA, so that's a good sign moving forward.

I have to balance Duke's 3 clerks with Texas' potential Supreme Court Justice. If only Obama would nominate today.

It's nice that I'm probably not going to have a decision to make about all of this. It's likely either Duke or Chicago and Chicago is going to make that decision for me.

What about NYU? They might feel taken down a peg after the new rankings.

I would think having Wood on the Court would benefit Chicago more than Texas, since she's been there so long. In any case, Kagan and Garland still seem to be the two most likely candidates.

I don't think I'd take NYU over Duke + $. Chicago >>> NYU for me due to location, its academic focus, and NYU's huge class size. Plus, I'm pretty sure NYU is a waitlist at this point.

Oh so now that NYU was taken down a peg you no longer want to go :P typical TLS rank whoring

Soulless you better go to Duke, or withdraw today so they can throw the leftovers from your Mordecai to me.

Look at my preferences on LSN, I'm definitely the anti-TLS rankings whore.

Yes after reading your profile I would say you aren't a whore, LB. That holds true for anyone who puts Stanford #2 to Berkley's #1.

A big part of why I'm going is because of the new dean's emphasis on PI, pro bono, and clerking. The guy's been a federal public servant since the day he walked out of Stanford LS--he's going to have knowledge about and connections to these kinds of positions. I just get the feeling that there's a ton of new energy and enthusiasm at Duke right now and I want to get in on it.

Figuring out who I am and being able to Facebook find me are two different things though. I have not tried to hide my identity throughout the enitre law school application process.

I just really wish they'd overhaul the LRAP already. It wasn't the best to begin with and now UVA has really opened up a gap by moving so quickly to change theirs.

Agreed. Though if you take the Mordecai LRAP won't be as substantial of an issue. I think there was some buzz at ASO that John Ahlers and Co. are revamping the LRAP to dovetail well with IBR and give some more relief to PI grads.

Went to a meeting on that topic actually. Sort of an LRAP/IBR 101 lunch time session. I think you're right about them attempting to make these two programs work well together. And besides that, John Ahlers is a pretty cool dude.
