Charles was awesome. I'd mostly describe him as a friendly dude - he made sure to go have coffee with (I think) everyone in the class, had a great classroom demeanor, and was pretty accommodating with office hours. Also - can't beat a dude that wears sandals with his suit. Probably one of my favorites from this year. My only criticism is that he was unclear on Erie, but I think almost all Civpro profs are.
That is not really a fair criticism. Erie is unclear on Erie. Hence why we have to have all these cases trying to explain it.
Haha that's what I was getting at.

Joseph Blocker (con law)
Deborah DeMott (torts) (I make a good onion tort already!)
and...ominously..."Staff" for civil procedure.

I'm sure you're not a moron. You chose to come to Duke. Also, that happens. For whatever reason one section dominates each class on that page. Refer to this schedule: http://www.law.duke.edu/curriculum/schedulefall2010
In that case, I'm in section 4.
I believe I am as well.

Section 2. ConLaw, CivPro, and Torts. Blocher for ConLaw, DeMott for Torts, and blank for CivPro. Don't see legal writing anywhere on there but I'm assuming that it'll be added at some point.

EDIT: Also, my stuff isn't here yet. Called today and they said it'll be here Tuesday morning, so that's fun. Definitely took advantage of the sales tax holiday this weekend by buying my computer at Southpoint Mall today. Had to stand out in the sun for almost an hour but I saved over $100 on sales tax.

Wow, at least 10% of section 2 is made up of posters ITT.

So, anyone still concerned about the over enrollment? I have to believe they'll address it at orientation. I don't think it's that big a deal, just that maybe we'll have to rely less on OCI. (/clueless 0L)

Maybe the assignments are alphabetical, since I know W would be in the last section (6). I think section 6 stays the latest out of them all too :( Section 6 and 2 also share a class with the summer starters, so there goes the hope that being less clueless than our classmates might bump us up the curve lol.

Time to buy books.

Thanks v8 for the info on Guy Charles

Hagaan for Ks 845-945

Civ Pro 11-12

Beale Crim 130-230

I'll take it. I at least get time between and before classes to prep and/or organize my notes.

Interesting, Beale was the one who's class I sat in on. She was very lax on the Socratic Method. I really liked the class I attended.

How do I know which casebooks to order?

Go to the class search through the ACES registration system, click aw, click on the classes you have, then click 'View Textbook Store Listing.'

About textbooks, is the bookstore listing usually accurate or do professors change at the last minute when classes start?

its a conspiracy!

Oh and thanks for the info about Blocher. Im glad I got him but having two other professors that are basically unknowns is a little frightening.

*edit*

Thinking about getting these books from amazon:

Cases and Materials on the Law of Torts (American Casebook Series) - James E. Meeks; Hardcover
Condition: New
$142.00

The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, 4th Edition (Examples & Explanations Series) - Joseph W. Glannon; Paperback
Condition: New
$41.83

Constitutional Law - Chemerinsky; Hardcover
Condition: New
$142.20

Civil Procedure - Stephen C. Yeazell; Hardcover
Condition: New
$143.52

Civil Procedure Examples & Explanations - Joseph W. Glannon; Paperback
Condition: New
$38.50

Going to pick up the Federal Rules of Procedure from the bookstore. They have copies and are apparently pretty cheap comparably.

Are these prices about right? Also, what do you guys think about getting those E&Es? From what I understand they can be pretty helpful. Not trying to bring the gunner here, just wondering if their helpfulness is worth the extra $80 or so.

So how much do you guys think that being in section with summer starters is going to matter. I am a bit apprehensive about competing with people that already know what to expect from law school and a law school exam.

I don't think they are alphabetical. Unless they are in reverse order that would have placed me in either section 7 or 8.

I must say that seems a bit unfair really. You are going be graded against people who have already experienced at least 2 law school exams. Guess they were smart to do summer start, lol.

They are not alphabetical. We are not really sure how they do it, although my section has a suspicious number of engineers and IP people...

Honestly, I'm not too concerned about it. I could make a detailed argument why, but I'm too lazy right now. If someone actually wants it, just ask, and I'll post it at some point tomorrow.

Hey all,

How do people know what books they need already? I have looked everywhere but cannot find the fall 2010 book list. Any help would be great.

Thanks.

1. log into aces.duke.edu
2. Click the registration tab
3. Click 'L' under the 'Course Subject Lookup' header
4. Click the green arrow next to law
5. Click the green arrows next to the classes you are registered for
6. Click the blue 'View Textbook Store Listing' link next to your particular section of that class

There are other ways to find your books as well like using the Duke bookstore's website.

I don't post on here often, but wanted to join this thread's ranks to say I'm in section 2 as well! I've also arrived in Durham safely and am not sure how to keep myself occupied for the next 9 or so days...

Great to hear good things about Blocher! I can't wait to get started.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
